  4. Ice Breaker Each table has a set of pictures on them. Please select a picture and on a sticky note, answer this simile: Instructional Coaching is like a ________________, because ___________________________________. Table talk to share and designate someone from your table to share with the group.

DISD’S Core Beliefs • Our main purpose is to improve student academic achievement. •  Effective instruction makes the most difference in student academic performance. •  There is no excuse for poor quality instruction. •  With our help, at risk students will achieve at the same rate as non-at risk students. •  Staff members must have a commitment to the pursuit of excellence. 

  6. Session Objective Campus Instructional Coaches (CIC) will : • develop coaching strategies to build rapport and trusting relationships with teachers and administrators • develop skills for communicating with teachers and administrators.

  7. What is a Coach? Using a note card/sticky note, take about 2 minutes and write what being a coach means to you.

  8. A coach is… Art Costa and Bob Garmston, the founders of Cognitive Coaching, define it as “a mediator, one who figuratively stands between a person and his thinking to help him become more aware of what is going on inside his head.”

  12. Ways to Build Rapport • Mirror their body language • Imitate their tonality • Breathe like they breathe • Match their rate of speech • Acknowledge what they say (paraphrase)

  14. Coaching Conversations Research has shown us that conversations coaches have with teachers can drive the learning for all-coaches, teachers, and students. Building teacher capacity through professional learning conversations (Tanner, P. and Vains-Loy, D., 2009, Queensland Government).
