Antifederalists Believed the Cons. did not protect individual rights, would serve interests of a privileged few and ignore the majority Doubted a single govt. could manage the affairs of a large nation Reasons for their beliefs Federalists • Separation of powers & checks & balances would protect Americans from the tyranny of centralized authority

  4. Antifederalists Feared a strong national govt. and did not want to create a govt. similar to the one in Great Britain Beliefs about a strong national govt. Federalists • Believed that it was necessary to fix the issues that existed under the Articles of Confederation

Each state would hold a special convention, voters would elect delegates to the convention who would then vote to accept or reject the Cons., bypassed the state legislatures who would oppose Cons. • 9 states needed to approve • 2. Most newspapers favored the Federalist cause and the influence of leaders like George Washington & Ben Franklin were much stronger than the influence of Antifederalist leaders

They believed a Bill of Rights was needed to protect their rights since the Constitution weakened the power of the states, they wanted a written guarantee of their rights from the federal government • 4. Freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, petition, right to bear arms, forbid quartering of troops in citizens homes, forbid unreasonable searches & seizures, fair treatment of people accused of crimes • 7.
