Why does business aviation pilot training need to be improved? • Training is the most effective mitigation for high risk flight operations. • Recent accident investigations have cited significant gaps in pilot performance: loss of control, runway excursion, CRM, decision making and judgment to name a few. • The industry is ready for change.

Background Safety Committee hosted a training symposium in Washington August 18-19, 2011 Attended by membership, regulators and vendors alike Engaged in discussions to better understand status and issues surrounding pilot training Clearly identified a need for action Business Aviation Pilot Training Project

SWOT Analysis Practical Test Standards (has not evolved with pace of change – not specific to our needs) Part 142 centers focused on Type certification and/or re-certifying 61.58 • Initial Training • Recurrent Training Instructors are developed to deliver 61.58 TCE/CA • Instructor skills and standards, experience Flight Departments are challenged to develop effective pilot training programs • Skills assessments and training mediations? • Must rely upon training partners for assistance/guidance Some issues we have uncovered

SWOT Analysis Many departments are beginning to take ownership of their programs • Identifying needs, developing scenario based training • SMS is helping to generating risk awareness Training Partners are beginning to evolve • Specialized alternative recurrent training • Non-approved training events Regulators are recognizing gaps and permitting some evolution in training elements • Stall recognition training Some indications of change
