  2. What is Matter? • Matter is anything with both mass and volume • Matter can be classified as pure substances or mixtures

  3. Pure Substances • Consist of only one kind of matter • Has the same properties throughout • Elements and Compounds are types of pure substances

  4. Elements • Contains only one kind of atom (basic unit of matter) • Cannot be broken down into a simpler substance • Example: Gold

  5. Compound • Contain only one kind of molecule • Made up of 2 or more elements chemically combined • Examples: Water

  6. Mixtures • Consists of 2 or more pure substances • Notchemically combined. • May be separated by physical means ex. filtering, heating, sorting

  7. Types of Mixtures • Homogenous Mixtures • Solutions • Heterogeneous Mixtures • Mechanical Mixtures • Suspension

  8. Homogeneous Mixtures • Uniform composition (the same) • Different components of the mixture cannot be seen. • Solutions (Salt water, coffee, air…) • Alloys (Steel)

  9. Heterogeneous Mixtures • Not uniform in composition • Mechanical Mixtures: can see two or more parts of mixture (cereal in milk, pizza, granola, salad, rocks…) • Suspension: Solid pieces scattered throughout liquid (milk, tomato juice)
