  2. What did you do as a child? • Play sports • Watch television • Play video games

  3. Have you ever been judged? • Guys are judged for being to skinny • Girls are judged for being to big.

  4. Startling Fact • 20,666,666 which is 1/3 of Americas youth

  5. Risks of Obesity • Type 2 diabetes • Cardiovascular disease • Atherosclerosis • Certain cancers

  6. What is Obestiy • A condition in which excess body fat accumulates to an extent that health may be negatively affected

  7. Type 2 Diabetes • When body does not produce enough insulin • When cells ignore insulin • Glucose will build up in blood due to this disease ~cells will be starved for energy ~high glucose levels will over time hurt eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart

  8. Cardiovascular Disease • 80,000,000 in USA have a form of this disease. • #1 cause of death in America. • This disease refers to a class of diseases dealing with ones heart and blood vessels.

  9. Atherosclerosis • Clogging or hardening of arteries or blood vessels caused by fatty deposits. • This is a major cause of heart attacks.

  10. Certain Cancers • Post menopausal breast cancer • Cancer of endometrium (lining of the womb) • Gall bladder • kidney

  11. Causes of obesity • Intake of fatty foods • Not enough exercise • Not enough sleep

  12. Food • Consumption of food is not always a problem • Types of food is the major concern ~fatty foods are ok but one must eat in moderation. • A study was done and the children chose to eat the same amount but a majority chose the wrong foods to eat

Exercise • USA Today conducted a survey and a majority would rather watch tv and play video games. ~children ages 8-10 spend 6 hours a day playing video games and watching tv. ~parents are a major contributor to this statistic. • 27% of children play sports of this % only 6% want to play sports. • 31% fewer children ride bikes than in 1995.

  14. Sleep • Sleep apnea causes lack of sleep ~One who sleeps doesn’t really sleep ~surgery and a breathing machine can be used. • Lack of sleep causes food cravings ~Those who don’t sleep eat instead ~your body doesn’t replenish itself

  15. Fact • At the current pace by 2050 60% men, 50% women, and 25% children would be obese. • In the UK the overall population is nearly 50% obese. • 49% of local authorities see obesity as there major problem.

  17. Children need to become more active • Don’t allow hours on tv and video games every day. • Parents need to allow more freedom • Sports • Other ways to be active

  18. Eating • Amount of food not really a problem • Feed children a variety of healthy foods mixed with occasional fatty foods. • Eat less Fast food.

  19. Sleeping • Set a time to allow at least 7-8 hours of sleep. • Less sleep causes hungar • Becoming healthier and losing weight can happen better with good sleep

  20. Closing • Don’t let technology keep you from becoming active. • Changing society from our age till today. • Take steps to help make people aware of the effects. • The more people know of risks the better chance of reducing the growing rate.
