SC B2 Overhead Lines Quesito 1: Quali sono gli indirizzi emersi che guideranno la prossima attività del Comitato? • The current and future studies are conducted according to the following stategic decisions: • Acceptability of OHL • Increase capacity of existing OHL • Increase of reliability and Availability of OHL • And grouped in four key themes: • Electrical performance (new conductors; Dynamic and enhanced line rating systems; Conversion of existing AC lines to DC,…) • Towers, foundations and insulators (Industry practices for tower design, testing technologies, environmental aspects and innovative solutions,… • Mechanical behaviour of conductors and fittings (fatigue; wind induced movements; assessment o fittings; updating and new standards;………..) • Asset management, reliability and availability: (GIS; lessons from big storm events; anti and de-icing systems; Live Line Maintenance;……….) 1 1 Latina, 24 novembre 2010

  2. SC B2 Overhead Lines Quesito 2: In quale dei TC projects il Comitato è integrato? The 4 Major Strategic Directions are :  Direction 1: The electrical power system of the future  Direction 2: Focus on environment and sustainability  Direction 3: Making the best use of the existing power system  Direction 4: Interactive communication with the public and political decision makers Selected items for SCB2 are the following: Firstly, major concern of to the public is the impact of the system on the environment. EMF, noise emission, aesthetic issues…  Secondly, issues where the environment influences the power systemare to be taken into account. Increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather conditions can be observed, more is to be expected.  On the transmission level, an urgent global need for increased transportation capacity is thus obvious. HVDC and AC transmission at the highest voltage levels are/will have to be implemented and also combination of AC and HVDC systems (Hybrids) 2 2 Latina, 24 novembre 2010

PS1 > Improved utilisation of OHL • Electrical optimisation of existing rights of way including new conductor technologies • Conversion of AC lines to DC operation • Line monitoring and dynamic line rating methods • Sharing rights of way with other parties PS2 > Condition and Assessment of OHL • Operational data collection for asset management • Diagnostics tools and methods for reliability and remaining life of line components assessment • Mechanical dynamic behaviour, seismic risk and extreme weather conditions PS3 > Maintenance and Refurbishment of OHL • Live line work, robots, drones • Use of information systems, maintenance policy, efficiency of different methods and strategies • Examples of refurbished lines 4 4 Latina, 24 novembre 2010
