  3. Aims and Requirements • In this chapter, students are required to grasp as follows: • 1.Know some basic knowledge about E-commerce. • 2.Know what search engine is and how to search information. • 3.Master some basic knowledge about domain name and website

  5. Task 1. Learn some basic knowledge about E-commerce • Brief Introduction to E-commerce • Companies, individuals, and institutions use the Internet in many ways. Companies use the Internet for electronic commerce, including advertising, selling, buying, distributing products, and providing customer service. In addition, companies use the Internet for business-to-business transactions, such as exchanging financial information and accessing complex databases. Businesses and institutions use the Internet for voice and video conferencing and other forms of communication that enable people to telecommute (work away from the office using a computer).

  6. What is E-commerce? • Electronic Commerce, briefly E-commerce or EC, is the practice of buying and selling products and services over the Internet, utilizing technologies such as the Web, electronic data interchange, email, electronic fund transfers, and smart cards. That is to say, you may search customers, negotiate, order, pay online, open electronic invoice, even go custom formalities and pay taxes through Internet. • E-commerce has two aspects: electronic mode and commercial activities. Global electronic commerce has exploded in recent years. Increasingly, the use of e-commerce is becoming a condition of trade for the manufacturing and retail industries and is imperative for all industries striving to maintain a competitive edge.

Mode of E-commerce • Generally speaking, E-commerce mainly has the following types: Consumer To Consumer, Business to Consumer (B2C) and Business to Business (B2B). • C2C • C2C is a business mode of consumer to consumer. Transactions are concluded between consumers. websites. • B2C • B2C is a mode of business from Business (companies) to Consumers (including individuals and organization customers). • B2B • B2B is a mode between Business and Business (companies) . It links the upper purchasing business with suppliers and lower sales business with the agents through an internal information platform and external websites. The purpose is to decrease the transaction cost and raise the customer satisfaction. Compared with B2C mode, B2B has obvious advantages in sales figures and sales area coverage; it is more meaningful to E-commerce development.

Task 2 Learn some knowledge about search engine • Brief introduction • When companies or individuals perform their e-commerce activities for advertising, selling, buying and distributing products, they have to realize them by some tools. E-commerce tools include computer and internet, search engine and database, domain name and website, etc. One can do most things in front of his computer talking through his microphone as well as typing to communicate with his customers and getting business information.

  9. What is a Search Engine? • A search engine is a searchable online database of internet resources. It has several components: search engine software, spider software, an index (database), and a relevancy algorithm (rules for ranking). It searches documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents where the keywords were found. Although search engine is really a general class of programs, the term is often used to specifically describe systems like Alta Vista and Excite that enable users to search for documents on the World Wide Web. • Typical famous search engine websites are google.com and baidu.com (for Chinese users ). Following are some knowledge of Google search engine:

  10. Task 3 Learn some knowledge about domain name and website. • What is a domain name? • A domain name is an alias for an IP address. Now what is an IP address? An IP address is a numeric code that signifies where to look through the Internet for content. An example of an IP address would be 22.226.141.25. Rather than typing in a long and easily forgotten IP address, a domain name helps you by typing an easily remembered name to access the same site.

Types of domain name 域名类型 • (1)International Domain: .com (mainly for companies); .net (mainly for net service companies); .org (mainly for governments and organizations); • (2)Additional International Domain: .biz (for business); .info (for information); .cc (for commercial company); .tv (for televisions and channels); etc. • (3)Country-level top domains: .cn (China), .fr (France), .jp (Japan- where .co.jp is also in widespread use) and .co.uk (England). These types of top-level domain name are generally under government control, adding a level of durability and permanence that a 3rd party might find hard to match..

  12. Promotion of Your Website 网站推广 • How to promote your website? It depends on your sales purpose. If your products are mainly sales in domestic market, or if you just want to purchase material from local market, you’d better promote your products and websites at the following public websites: • (1) baidu.com 百度 • (2) sohu.com, sina.com, 163.com 搜狐,新浪,网易 • (3) 3721.com, cn.alibaba.com 雅虎百业窗中文上网(原3721网络实名),阿里巴巴中国站 • If your products are sales in international market, or you mostly export your products in a foreign market, you’d better promote your products and website at the suggested public websites: : • (1) google.com 谷歌 • (2) alibaba.com 阿里巴巴英文站 • (3) yahoo.com 雅虎 • (4) ecplaza.net 韩国贸易网

  13. Task 4 Practice • Make a dialogue to describe the importance of Internet and E-commerce in doing business and our lives.

  14. Answer the following questions. • Where are you usually getting information? Give at least 10 commonly used famous websites. • How many modes of e-commerce? Have you have any experience on e-commerce activities? • What is search engine? How to get information through a search engine? What kind of techniques do you know to use a search engine? • What is a domain name? How many types of domain names do you know? Give examples. • How many skills do you know to design your website? • Different products need different channels of promotion, which websites are commonly used for a domestic promotion and which websites chosen for international promotion recently?

  15. Searching practice. • 1. Write out at least 10 B2B websites. • 2. Search kites suppliers on google.com or other websites.
