  1. Gun Control Patrol PowerPoint by GiannaDeBise

  2. Gun coNTROL • Gun control laws aim to regulate the sale, use, and possession of guns. • There is tension between gun control laws and the right to bear arms. • 16,272 murders were committed in the United States during 2008. Of these, about 10,886 or 67% were committed with firearms. • Every 1 in 240 people in the U.S. are murdered. • Guns are the most common weapon choice of all homicides and suicides. • 40% of all people in the U.S. are reported to own a gun.

  3. “Access and ownership of a gun may not include people under the age of 25 or people with any mental disabilities.” I believe people under the age of 25 should not own a gun because the maturity level may that is desired may not be developed yet. People with mental disabilities who own a gun are putting themselves and others in danger. This law helps maintain the safety and protection of people living in the U.S.

  4. Individual Rights and the Common Good • Owning a gun is still legal, just with stronger regulations. • You are allowed to express your opinion of my law. • You can protest and fight against this law. • It ensures a higher rate of safety for communities. • Hopefully, less shootings will occur. • We are aiming for less deaths and a heavier sense of protection with this law.

  5. District of Columbia v. Heller

  6. Conflict? The district of Columbia refused Dick Heller his application to own a handgun for his personal protection. He believed that since the Second Amendment gave him the right to bear arms, then he should be able to own a handgun to protect his home.

  7. What was the court ruling? The Supreme Court ruled that since the Second Amendment gives citizens the right to bear arms, citizens should have the right to protect their homes. Therefore, Dick Heller was permitted to own a handgun in his home.

  8. What was the Precedent set? The District of Columbia allowed citizens ownership of handguns as long as the reasoning was appropriate.

  9. Charles Williams v. Maryland

  10. Conflict? Charles Williams was convicted of carrying a handgun in public without a permit.

  11. What was the court ruling? State law says that all guns must be carried with a permit and if someone does not have a permit for that gun, it is illegal. Therefore, Charles Williams lost his trial.

  12. What was the Precedent set? There was no real precedent set because no law was changed in the process. The law that you must own a permit with the gun you have was certainly not abolished or changed, but stressed in the court that day.

  13. How do these two cases relate? • They both deal with male citizens who thrive to change the law and fight for what they believe is right. • They both deal with handgun possession. • Both men believed that owning a handgun was an important right that no matter what, they should receive.

  14. Sandy hook school shooting

  15. Sandy Hook school shooting • The murderer, Adam Lanza was a 20 year old man. • 26 people were shot in this shooting. • Lanza had many mental disorders that affected his choices and judgment.

  16. Colorado Movie Theater shooting

  17. Colorado Movie theater Shooting • John Eagan Holmes killed 12 people in the shooting. • The killer had several suicide attempts, therefore he was not mentally stable. • This shooting took place at a movie theater during the premiere of Bat Man.

  18. How do these events relate? • Both murderers had mental disorders that affected their judgment. • Both events contained many innocent deaths. • Both murderers were under the age of 25.
