  1. Today’s Lesson Applying the Counting Principle of Addition and Multiplication

  2. Warm-Up Activity Today we will warm up by creating a tree diagram.

  3. Draw a tree diagram for the following: You are shopping for a T-shirt, and it comes in sizes S, M, L, or XL; colors of white, black, and gray; and textures of solid or tie-dye. How many different shirts are you able to choose from?

  4. Write the outcomes at the right of the tree diagram and the number of choices with the description below the tree diagram.

  5. Textures: 2 Sizes: 4 Colors: 3 sws mws lws xlws xlwt swt mwt lwt lbs xlbs sbs mbs xlbt lbt mbt sbt lgs xlgs mgs sgs mgt lgt xlgt sgt = 24 choices

  6. Draw another tree diagram for the following:You are buying gas for your car and can choose a grade of 87, 89, or 93. You can pay by cash, check, credit card, or debit card. How many different choices do you have to choose from?

  7. Write the outcomes at the right of the tree diagram and the number of choices with the description below the tree diagram. Compare the two tree diagrams. Do you see a pattern?

  8. Grade: 3 Payment: 4 87cash 87check 87cc 87dc 93cash 93check 93cc 93dc 89cash 89check 89cc 89dc =12 choices

  9. Whole-Class Skills Lesson Today you will be applying the Counting Principle of Addition and Multiplication.

  10. The Counting Principle of Addition How many individual choices do you have? • black, gray, or white? (3) • small, medium, large, or extra large? (4) • 87, 89, or 93? (3) • solid or tie-dye? (2) Each sum represents the Counting Principle of Addition.

  11. The Counting Principle of Multiplication How many possible outcomes are there to choose from if a T-Shirt comes in 4 sizes, 3 colors, and 2 textures? Multiplying the sums represents the Counting Principle of Multiplication.

  12. Use the Counting Principle of Addition and Multiplication to determine the possible outcomes Menuentrée choices:beef or chickenside choices: corn, potatoes, beans, or carrotsdessert choices: cake or pie

  13. Entrees = 2 Sides = 4 Desserts = 2 2(4)(2) = 16
