  1. Hi! I'm Mrs. Minahan • I have been teaching at Northside for 14 years. • I have a BS in Psychology and Education from Liberty University and my doctorate in parenting from the school of hard knocks • I have been married for 35 years • I have 4 children, 2 grandchildren and 1 more on the way 

Mission For The Class • Glorify God in every area • I Corinthians 10:31 Colossians 3:17 • Learn and put into practice Biblical principles of kindness and acceptance of each other as we work together. • Promote the fundamentals of responsibility and accountability that students should have in order to succeed in all areas of life.

  3. SCHEDULE • School starts promptly at 8:00 A.M. • PLEASE WORK WITH ME TO TRAIN YOUR CHILD TO BE ON TIME AND PREPARED.

  4. Bible: Positive Action Truths • Math: BJU Press • English, Reading, spelling: BJU Press • History/Science: BJU Press • Vocabulary word studies: Sadlier Oxford

  5. Bible Verses • Bible verses assigned each week. • We will recite our Bible verses each day. • Quizzes will be given over each verse assignment and Bible lessons will be quizzed over as well.

  6. MATH • Math is conceptually oriented with a focus on application and critical thinking. • Math homework will be assigned nightly.

  7. Math facts will be reviewed daily and will include all four operations. • Math facts are critical to math success. • Speed in recall is also essential and we will work together as a class to create automaticity in recall.

  8. WHAT ABOUT BOOK REPORTS? • Book reviews will be assigned quarterly and instructions will be given thoroughly in class with ample time to complete each assignment.

  9. ENGLISH • Fifth grade grammar is a review of basic grammar with the goal of application. • The focus will be on applying grammar to our everyday speech and writing assignments.

  10. ALL writing assignments will be graded on grammar as well as content.

  11. Writing • ALL written assignments are part of our English curriculum and are the sole responsibility of the student.

  12. Social Studies • Bob Jones University Press Heritage Studies • 20th century history • (reconstruction period to present day)

  13. Any projects that complement our study will be assigned ahead of time and will be student friendly.

  14. SOME NOTES ABOUT HOMEWORK

  15. WHAT IS THE HOMEWORK POLICY? Nightly and due next day If homework is not in class the next day, a zero will be given and the assignment will be due the following day. I will not accept homework more than one day late and zeros will be changed to a 70 upon completion.

  16. Late homework will not be done at school.

  17. HOMEWORK PASS • A on a test = homework pass in that subject area. • Homework passes may be issued for other reasons at my discretion. • The homework pass may be used for exemption from one written homework assignment for the course the pass was received.

  18. WHAT ABOUT LUNCH TICKETS? • Purchased before 8:00 A.M. in the gym. • Name on ticket • Turned in to me. • May turn in as many as they like.

  19. WHAT ABOUT WEDNESDAY FOLDERS? • Graded work will be included in the Wednesday folder. • Return by Friday • Please indicate any communication on the outside of the folder for prompt review.

  20. LOCKERS • Lockers are issued for the purpose of hanging coats and bookbags and storing extra materials not needed in the classroom on a daily basis. • If you want your child to have a lock, please make sure he/she is fully capable of unlocking it. • I will need a copy of the combination.

  22. DISCIPLINE GOALS • TO DECREASE DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR • TO INCREASE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR THROUGH COOPERATION AS A GROUP • TO MAKE LEARNING ENJOYABLE FOR ALL • TO ENSURE SAFETY FOR ALL • TO FOSTER INDEPENDENT LEARNING

  23. WHAT IS THE DISCIPLINE POLICY? • Contracts: positive and negative Goal is to stay off the chart. I will inform you if your child receives 2 checks in the same day. 3 checks in one day will result in demerits and a trip to Mr. Washburn

  24. INCENTIVES • Incentives will primarily be handled on an individual basis and through the “team system.” • Rewards will be individual and team focused.

  25. DEMERITS • Demerits are occasionally necessary for repeated behavior issues. • These are issued by Mr. Washburn when it becomes necessary to include him in the discipline procedure.

  26. If a demerit is issued it is because all other classroom strategies have been exhausted. • The demerit must be signed, and I will email or call you to inform you that one is on the way.

  31. 1) I communicate regularly through my website • 2) Homework will appear weekly on the website • 3) updates are immediate if there is ever a change in homework.

  32. There are many links that can be accessed through the website to help reinforce important concepts we study. • I will give extra credit for time spent practicing math and English concepts using links on the site.

  33. Send me a signed note with a brief explanation of what was practiced to receive the extra credit. :=)

  34. CONCLUSION • I look forward to a successful 5th grade year. • The key to success is working with me at all times and communicating concerns early. • My after school classroom hours are usually 3:30-5:00.

  35. If an appointment is needed, it can be made through the school office or directly with me. • PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DISCUSS A CONCERN IN THE MORNING WHILE I AM PREPARING FOR OUR DAY.

  36. Once students are entering the classroom, I am AT WORK and that is not a good time to chat with me about situations that arise. • Thank you for your help • Please pray for me daily.

  37. HOW TO PRAY • 1) pray that God will give me wisdom and strength for each situation that comes up throughout the day. • 2) pray that God would enable me to meet the individual needs of each student on a daily basis as this is my heart’s desire.
