  1. Eugenics and Internalized Racism:How They Affect Assessment for Children with Special Needs. Audrey Marie Joseph Chua Choo Ngoh (Zu Er) Drizzle Hshieh Chyi Yeu Juliana Sali Laura Noelle Shepherdson Manjula Joseph Nurdurrah A. Bari Nurlyana Ismail Nur Suhaili Safari Wijaya Si Su Li Sandra

  2. Eugenics: A definition Berson, M. J. & Cruz, B. (2001) • “the term eugenics is derived from the Greek word meaning ‘well-born or good in birth.” • Goal: Improvement of Human Species Through the Careful Selection of Parents

  3. Case Study: Buck vs. Bell • In 1920s, a girl name Carrie Bark was adopted by a family who treated her shabbily by forcing her to do household chores for not only the family but others as well • When they found out that she as raped by her their nephew, and became pregnant, they went to court asking to certify her to be deemed as feeble-minded. • The judge claimed that Carrie was a ‘moral imbecile’ and was admitted to the Virginia State Colony for Epileptic & Feeble-Minded Persons.

  4. What happened to Carrie Bark? • Throughout her stay in the institute, she was sterilized by Dr. Bell for the ‘good of herself’ and society. • Her sister was later brought to the hospital for appendicitis and was also sterilized. • Within 10 years after the verdict, more than 100, 000 Americans may have been forcibly sterilized.

  5. Eugenics as part Internalized Racism The International Re-evaluation Counseling Committees (2007) • “Internalized racism occurs when people targeted by racism are against their will, coerced and pressured to agree with the distortion of racism.” Examples: • Racism has made us think of ourselves or each other as stupid, lazy, unimportant, or inferior. • Racism has made us criticize or verbally attack each other, using the racist messages of our societies, or allow others in our group to do so. • Racism has made us physically attack or kill each other, playing out our rage about racism at one another. • Racism has made us put our individual well-being last. Racism has made us unable to think about our physical and emotional health, making us vulnerable to heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, ulcers, and more.

  6. How does Eugenics affect Assessments Teacher Biasness: • When a teacher who has a certain form of internalized racism, she/he may not be objective towards assessing the child. • Example: Teachers evaluating and catering to children of the same race who are desirable in behavior and intellect. • Not so much for pure race but for a superior race. To be a superior race, others who are challenged in all aspects of life may be looked down upon. RESULTS: • Inaccurate results • Ineffective and Insufficient follow-up
