  1. Review Test on Wednesday April 18th!

  2. Review • Which state of matter has as a definite volume, but no definite shape? • Liquid! • Heat is a form of what? • Energy

  3. Review • Why does liquid rise in a convection current? • Because it gets hot and when the particles spread apart it becomes lighter then the rest of liquid.

  4. Review • What happens during the plateaus of a heating curve? • Phase change! • What is a comfortable room temperature in Celsius • Around 20˚C. • What causes the electrical wires to sag more in the summer? • They expand because of the heat!

  5. Review • Describe the changes that take place with the transfer of heat to and from water. • Kinetic energy is the energy of movement. Describe the particles in each state of matter. • Solid • Liquid • Gas

  6. Review • Which of the following is FALSE: • If particles gain enough energy they could change state. • When particles gain energy the become colder. • As particles gain energy they speed up. • As particles gain energy they move further apart.

  7. Review • Which of the following is not a form of heat transfer? • Conduction • Sublimation • Convection • Radiation • Which of the following is TRUE: • Solid has a definite shape and volume • Liquid has no definite volume and no definite shape. • Vapour is used to describe gases that are usually found as a solid. • Gas is super-unexcited and super-cold

  8. Review • Which of the following is an example of radiation? • The spoon’s handle getting hot when in a cup of soup because the heat moves up the spoon • The sun warming the black asphalt of a basketball court • Rice being cooked in a boiling pot of water • Pancakes being made in a frying pan.

  9. Q: What was the spoon’s handle getting hot when stuck in a cup of hot water an example of (hint: it’s one of the three types of heat transfer!)

  10. Fill in the Table Below…

  11. For the Test • Know the 3 states of matter and the phase changes of matter • Define energy. Know the difference between potential and kinetic energy • Explain what happens to particles when heat is added • Be able to explain expansion and contraction and give examples from our everyday lives • Be able to explain the difference between heat and temperature • Know the 3 temperature scales

  12. For the Test Continued…. • Know the three types of heat transfer and be able to explain what is occurring in each • Know that heat transfer occurs from hot to cold • Conduction and the states of matter • What conductors and insulators are and examples • Effect salt has on the freezing/melting point
