  1. 2010 The Year To

  2. Turn in your Bibles to: 2 Corinthians 5:1-11

  3. 2 Corinthians 5:4 • Verse 4 • For we that are in this tabernacle [tent] do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. God has More NOT Less!

  4. 2 Corinthians 5:5a • Prepared by God! • Verse 5 • Now he [God] that hath wrought [prepared] us for the selfsame thing is God, • God designed the human body such that it is ready to receive more from God.

  5. 2 Corinthians 5:5a • Guaranteed by God! • Verse 5 • who also hath given unto us the earnest [promise] of the Spirit. So let’s ask….

  6. Everyone Do you have the Holy Spirit of God living in you?

  7. Turn to Ephesians 1:13 How does Paul say one receives the Holy Spirit?

  8. 2 Corinthians 5:6 • Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: The presence of the Holy Spirit keeps us confident that there is a God who will keep His promises.

  9. 2 Corinthians 5:7 Almost as a side note, Paul reminds them: • Verse 7 • For we walk by faith, not by sight:

  10. 2 Corinthians 5:8 • We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

  11. What did Paul see that I haven’t? See 2 Corinthians 12

  12. 2 Corinthians 5:9a • Wherefore we labor, • Commentary • We labor (v. 9). This means “we are ambitious.” There is an ambition that is selfish and worldly, but there is also a holy ambition that honors the Lord. Paul’s great ambition was to be well-pleasing to Jesus Christ. Warren W. Wiersbe

  13. 2 Corinthians 5:9b • Wherefore we labour [what is our aim?], that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. Both now in this tabernacle and at the final judgment for Christians.

  14. 2 Corinthians 5:9b • [that]…We may be accepted of him. Question • What does Paul mean by this? • Ephesians 1:6

  15. Ephesians 1:6 • To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. Unconditional Acceptance in Christ vs. Acceptable and Unacceptable actions, choices and behavior

  16. Commentary • The word translated “accepted” (“well-pleasing”) is used in several other places in the New Testament, and each of these references helps us better understand what it is that pleases the Lord. • It is well-pleasing to Him when we present our bodies to Him as living sacrifices (Rom. 12:1), Warren W. Wiersbe

  17. Paul is speaking about that which is PLEASING to the Lord. Are you concerned about pleasing the Lord?

  18. The Question is NOT Is this lawful—the question is: Is this pleasing to God?

  19. 2 Corinthians 5:10 • For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; • that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

  20. Huge Misconception Some people believe that Baptists don’t believe in accountability because we teach eternal security of the believer; however, this is NOT the case.

  21. God the Judge God Judged: • The angels that rebelled • Adam and Eve • Tower of Babel • The earth with a flood • Sodom and Gomorra • Egypt, Israel, Assyria, Babylon, Jerusalem, Rome • The Church through Ananias and Sapphira

  22. Biblical Fact Christians are NOT exempt from accountability before God for the life they live.

  23. Reconcile • Romans 8:1 • There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. • 2 Corinthians 5:10 • For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

  24. Judgment Seat • The term “judgment seat” comes from the Greek word bema, which was the platform in Greek towns where orations were made or decisions handed down by rulers (see Matt. 27:19; Acts 12:21; 18:12). • It was also the place where the awards were given out to the winners in the annual Olympic Games. Warren W. Wiersbe

  25. Coming Judgment Matthew 16:27 • For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Hebrews 9:27 • And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

  26. Accountability • The more knowledge the more accountability • Matthew 11:24 • But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

  27. Accountability • Luke 12:48 • But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. • For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

  28. At the Judgment: Will God expect the same of a Christian who is part of a house church in Togo, West Africa as those in BBC, Fayetteville, NC?

  29. Turn to 1 Corinthians 3:11-15

  30. Words from the King Luke 12:33 • Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax [grow] not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

  31. I am not a Christian What does the Bible say about what judgment I will face?

  32. Turn to Revelation 20:11-15

  33. Finally Paul writes: • So then every one of us [believers] shall give account of himself to God. Romans 14:12 • Personally • NOT as families
