  2. Your organs do not work alone They must be linked to other organs in order to carry out all the functions required Linking of organs is called an organ system The cells in tissues must be healthy for organs and organ systems to function

  3. Human Organ Systems • Skeletal System • Made up of bones and cartilage • Provides support for movement • Provides points for attachment for other tissues

  4. Human Organ Systems • Muscular System • Made up of skeletal muscles including tendons and ligaments • Allows you to move from place to place • Moves substances through your body

  5. Human Organ Systems • Circulatory System • Made up of the heart, blood vessels and blood • Delivers nutrients • Moves gases • Removes waste

  6. Human Organ Systems • Respiratory System • Made up of nose, trachea and lungs • Allows oxygen from the air to enter the body • Allows waste carbon dioxide to exit the body

  7. Human Organ Systems • Nervous System • Made up of the brain, spinal cord and nerves • Sends and receives messages throughout the body • Controls behaviour, movements and body processes (digestion, circulation etc.)

  8. Human Organ Systems • Digestive System • Made up of the mouth, salivary glands, esophagus, stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, intestines • Breaks food down so nutrients can be absorbed by blood and transported to all cells • The colon expels solid waste

  9. Human Organ Systems • Excretory System • Made up of kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra • Removes liquid waste and extra water from the body • Filters the blood

  10. Human Organ Systems • Integumentary System • Made up of skin, hair, nails and sweat glands • Skin hair and nails protect the body • Sweat glands help maintain body temperature

Human Organ Systems • Endocrine System • Made up of hormone producing glands • Hormones (chemicals) that regulate every body function • Glands like the pituitary, thyroid, and pancreas produce hormones that carry message to other parts of the body • The hypothalamus in the brain controls the endocrine and nervous system

  12. Human Organ Systems • Lymphatic System • Made up of lymph, lymph nodes, lymph vessels and lymphoid tissues • Protects the body by destroying and removing any invading organisms and abnormal cells

  13. Human Organ Systems • Reproductive System • Made up of organs for reproduction • Different for males and females
