  2. Do you think that the United States should have ONE official language? • “This is _America_! If you want to live here you speak out langauge.” • “Yes this is America- not the United Nations!!” • “yes. Provides a unification of the nations” • “YES ENGLISH” • “It does but children should Be required to learn another language and be Fluent.” • “NO! Read the constitionconstitution and study America’s Founder Fathers” • “We do have an official language English.” • “Yes-less miscommunication and everyone else could be on the same page” • “YES most countries do!” • “We are one country-If we moved somewhere else we would be expected to learnin their lang.” • “No, this country is built on diversity. One language would be a limiting factor”

  3. Do you think the media and computers/texting devices have hurt children’s and adults literacy? • “YES! – they don’t know how to spell or use correct grammar- the devices do it for them! AND to many “shorthand” uses of works i.e. R instead of are and u instead of you, etc…” • Helped because they have a bigger variety of things to read.” • “It does not allow the children/adults to use their brain to remember phone numbers like we used to. It also stops communications that parents need with their children.”

  4. Do talk shows such as The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, The Tonight Show, and SNL hurt literacy? (people no longer read the news) • “Yes- you only get a slanted view from TV and watching TV keeps people from reading and often from forming their own opinions.” • “Satire is now considered NEWS!” • “NO! Those shows are mostly liberal comedy.”

  5. Do you think FB and Twitter have aided in making proper grammar obsolete? • “shortcuts like ‘how r u’ do not help literacy” • “yes, everything is abbreviated. Children don’t know how to spell out the words.” • “I don’t think that these social networks will make grammar obsolete. The schools and the colleges have their standard rules for proper writing and english. As long as this stays enforsed, whatever you do outside of school is considered entertainment.” • “yes poor grammar & spelling skills short attention span and inability to focus on lengthy writing” • “No puNctuAtion & tAlkiNgiNShortHANd”
