  1. CANCER UPDATE

  2. Cancer statistics • According to GLOBOCAN, an estimated 12.66 million new cancer cases and 7.56 million deaths occurred in 2008. The most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide are lung (1.61 million, 12.7% of the total), breast (1.38 million, 10.9%) and colorectal cancers (1.24 million, 9.7%). The most common causes of cancer death are lung (1.38 million, 18.2% of the total), stomach (0.74 million, 9.7%) and liver cancers (0.69 million, 9.2%). • In US, 1,479,350 new cancer cases and 562,340 deaths from cancer are projected to occur in the United States in 2009 • Based on current rates GLOBOCAN 2008 projects that by 2030, there will be almost 21.4 million new cases diagnosed annually and that there will be over 13.2 million deaths from cancer.

  5. Risk factors for cancer • Genetic: • Familial (single gene defect): rare • Sporadic (multifactorial): single gene plus environmental factors • Environmental carcinogens • Chemical ( tobacco, asbestos, alcohol), ionizing radiation, reactive oxygen species, etc. • Biologic agents, viruses • Epstein-Barr virus (Burkitt’s lymphoma) • Hepatitis B or C (liver cancer) • Human papilloma virus (cancer of the cervix) • Helicobacter pylori (gastric cancer) • Diet • Carcinogens in food: • could be naturally present in food • contaminants of food (e.g., aflatoxin in peanuts) • products of cooking or preservation (e.g., heterocyclic amines)

  6. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. • Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime • When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

  7. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

  8. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc. • Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

  9. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction. • Chemotherapyand radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites. • An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

  10. Cancer cells food • Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. • A better natural substitute would be honey or molasses but only in very small amounts.

  11. Cancer cells food (cont’d) • Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. • By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soya milk cancer cells are being starved.

  12. Preventive measures • Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. • A meat-based diet is acidic and • It is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. • Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. • By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

  13. Preventive measures • A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. • About 20% can be from cooked food including beans.

  14. Preventive measures • Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate which have high caffeine • Avoid meat (saucisson, jambo, …)

  16. Positive living • Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. • Anger, unforgivenessand bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. • Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life. • Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

  17. To keep your body healthy • Drink plenty of water every day. • Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar. • Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants. • Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy. • Make time to practice meditation and prayer. • Play more games. • Read more books than you did in last year. • Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day. • Sleep for 7 hours. • Take a 30 minutes walk every day. And while you walk, smile.

  18. “Prevention is better than cure” May your Soul and flesh be protected by our Almighty God.

  19. GOD BLESS YOU
