  1. Commonwealth of VirginiaFlow-Ecology Project Meeting VDEQ June 23, 2011

  2. Data Inventory

  3. Data Sources • INSTAR • DGIF • MAHA • MAIA • NAWQA • DCR • TN • ProbMon (Genus and Family)

  4. Data • Compiled • Biological • Fish • Benthic Macroinvertebrates • Available • Habitat • Many different forms • RBP visual • EMAP style

  5. Criteria for Biological Data Benthos • Spatial/temporal distribution among classes • Community level (any targeted species analyses separate) • Genus/species (with OTU considerations) • Family level OK, separate analyses • Relative abundance – fractions of sample processed not tracked to give abundances (LIFE index on actual abundance binned into log categories) • Richness metrics – LOE issue, mainly with NAWQA (resampling)

  6. Criteria for Biological Data Fish • Spatial/temporal distribution among classes • Community level (any targeted species analyses separate) • Some methods issues or targeted sampling • Most species level - consistent • Real abundances

  7. Data Issues • Points outside of VA • Can filter on state (based on GIS using supplied coordinates) • Different levels of effort • Fish • Unknown • gear, reach length, etc. • Benthos • Taxonomy • Subsample Size • Methods • DCR, targeted • NAWQA, subsampled but correction factor unknown • Presence/Absence vs. Abundance vs. Unknown • Missing dates

  8. Benthos – data comparability • Taxonomy • All datasets are primarily genus/species • Percent of taxa • 50-60% genus IDs • 10-30% species IDs • Subsample size • Primarily 300 organisms • NAWQA is recorded as total abundance. Need subsample percent.

  9. Non-Community Methods • Excluded targeted and presence/absence data • Fish • Total individuals = 0 • Single taxon • American eel, Atlantic sturgeon, northern snakehead • Benthos • Total individuals = 0 • Additional samples where number of individuals equaled number of taxa were not excluded.

  10. Many PM_Gen came out as PM_Fam (same StationID)

  11. Number of Samples • Benthos • 9,171 • Primary samples • Fish • 20,451

  12. Benthos

  13. Number of Samples - Fish

  14. Benthos – Samples by Month

  15. Fish – Samples by Month

  16. Maps of Biologial Data • Data Type • Benthos • Fish • Stations • ALL • Subset • State = “VA” • Methods <> “Presence/Absence” • Temporal • By decade

  17. Replicate Sampling • All on different days • Benthos • State = VA and Method <> P/A • 1,429 Stations with more than 1 sample • 334 same day duplicates • Fish • State = VA/TN and Method <> P/A • 1,598 Stations with more than 1 sample

  18. Benthos - ALL

  19. Benthos – VA, Method <> “P/A”

  20. Benthos – VA, Method <> “P/A” Pre-1950 are bad dates

  21. Fish - ALL

  22. Fish – VA/TN, Method <> “P/A”

  23. Fish – VA/TN, Method <> “P/A” Pre-1950 are bad dates

  24. Issue with duplicate sites and different locations • INSTAR is supposed to include DGIF but only includes a limited number tagged as DGIF. No exact matches on Lat/Long between the data sets. • In this example both points are possible matches but neither is on NHD+ reach. Nor would they drain to the same reach. But both are supposed to be the same DGIF site. • Recommend dropping DGIF tagged data in INSTAR.

  25. Physical Habitat • Not easily merged. • No Data • DGIF • NAWQA • DCR • TN • RBP • INSTAR • MAHA • MAIA • EMPA • MAHA • MAIA • ProbMon

  26. Example Stream Network

  27. USGS gages (n=398) 309/398 gages have at least 1 bio station (fish or bugs) on the same NHD reach.

  28. Stations by Ecoregion (Level 3) Method = community or unknown State = VA (and/or TN for Fish)

  29. Hydrological Flow Classes Orth et al. DRAFT

  30. Orth et al. DRAFT
