  2. East Coast Asian American Student Union (ECAASU)

  3. History of ECAASU A. Participated in anti Vietnam war movement B. Lobbied elite colleges to admit more Asian American students C. Lobbied for Asian American studies program on college campuses D. Became a springboard for Asian American students’ activism in their communities • Established in the late 1960’s on Yale campus, against the background of the civil rights movement, as Asian American began to examine the injustices and aspirations that were unique to their needs.

  4. Current Role of ECAASU A. Mission: to inspire, educate and empower those interested in AAPI issues B. Advocacy on national issues that have statistically significant impact on the AAPI communities 1. Domestic violence 2. Support and prevention relating to diabetes - Diabetes is the 5th leading cause of death for Asian Americans

  5. West Coast Asian Pacific American Student Union (WCAPSU)

  6. Reviving WCAPSU Proposed Mission by the WCAPSU Revival Team: The West Coast Asian Pacific Islander Student Union (WCAPSU) is dedicated to educating, supporting, and advocating for the Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) students and communities throughout the West Coast states through partnerships with API(A) communities and organizations. • According to Melinda Wang of ECAASU, the old WCAPSU shut down due to internal problems.

  11. Empowerment (ex. to remove the stigma of the thinking that De Anza is “just” a community college) Awareness (ex. to be able to identify and advocate for APA social issues in an ethnoburb/bubble) De Anza College API Students Need

  12. Action Plan:Organize WCAPSU at De Anza College

WCAPSU De Anza Mission (to be accomplished by peer members as well as outside volunteers) • AWARENESS BUILDING: Identity, Heritage, Recognition of Importance of API Groups, and Recognition of the Unique Needs of API Students • MENTORSHIP: Academic, Career/Vocational Training, Leadership Training, General Advice • ADVOCACY: Admission and Records (esp. for ESL students, Counseling Issues (API specific needs)

Organization Options • WCAPSU as part of Asian Pacific American Leadership Institute (APASL) • Pro: Club is already structured • Con: APASL is registered as a diversity club (tends to focus on social events), will share budget w/ other activities • WCAPSU as a new club to promote advocacy for API Students: Pros and Cons • Pro: Club will focus on advocacy, will have its own budget • Con: Must apply for new club status, write new set of constitution, find members, etc. which can take a long time

  15. Other Issues to Consider • Member Recruitment/Buy-In • Specific Activities and Plan of Action for First Year • Frequency of Meeting • Once stabilized, how to help start WCAPSU in other community college campuses such as Evergreen, Mission, etc.

  16. THERE’S A NEED FOR MORE COMMUNITY COLLEGE REPRESENTATION IN THESE STUDENT UNIONS BECAUSE WE HAVE SPECIFIC STRUGGLES THAT NEED SUPPORT AND ADVOCACY.
