  2. Introduction • The Objective of this briefing is to prepare you to contact the office of your State Senator or Representative to schedule a meeting. Meeting directly with your legislators increases the visibility and relationship of the Civil Air Patrol with our elected officials. • Outline • Scheduling appointments • Visiting your Legislator • For Cadets: Serving as pages • Government Affairs Office

Scheduling Appointments • To obtain the contact information for your State Senator or Representative visit: http://www.nmlegis.gov/lcs/legislatorsearch.aspx • Call your Legislator’s offices several day’s ahead of time. • Identify yourself as a Civil Air Patrol member and inform the secretary that you will be in Santa Fe on an appointed day and would like to meet with your Legislator to encourage them to join the Legislative Squadron. • Be flexible with your legislator’s schedule. • Coordinate with your squadron the intended visit and invite other constituents to attend.

  4. Visiting Your Legislator • Bring hand outs to give to the legislator that outline the mission of CAP. Visit the Government Affairs website at the Wing Homepage www.nmcap.org for printable resources and to download the correct membership form specifically for Legislative members. • Ensure all members are in the proper uniform. • Prepare a message to your legislator ahead of time. • Thank them for meeting with you. • Explain the three mission of CAP. • Inform them of your squadrons accomplishments and personal accounts. • Invite them to join the CAP Legislative Squadron and explain the benefits. • With your Squadron Commander’s permission, invite your legislator to visit your squadron meeting.

Coordinate with NM Wing • After meeting with your legislator email the NM Wing Government Affairs Office at nmcapgov@gmail.com and inform them how the meeting went. • Send the completed membership application to the NM Wing Government Affairs Office by either. • Scanning and emailing the form to nmcapgov@gmail.com, or • Mail the form to New Mexico Wing Headquarters: P.O. Box 5069 Kirtland AFB, NM 87185-5069

  6. For Cadets: Paging • Paging offers young men and women the chance to work with their legislator for a day by assisting them with general office tasks. Pages accompany their legislators on the house floor and behind the scenes during the legislative process. • In the state of New Mexico this activity is an excused absence from many schools. Check with your school administrator before scheduling. • To obtain the contact information for your State Senator or Representative visit: http://www.nmlegis.gov/lcs/legislatorsearch.aspx • Call your Legislator’s offices several day’s ahead of time and inform the secretary that you would like to page for your legislator on an appointed day. • Identify yourself as a Civil Air Patrol member and inform the secretary that you will encourage your Legislator to join the Legislative Squadron. • Coordinate with your squadron the intended visit.
