Expectations • You will summarize how Greece was so easily conquered by Macedonia. • You will understand and be able to explain in your own words how Alexander the Great was considered great by some and not so great by others. • You will examine how Alexander the Great displayed cultural diffusion of Greek culture throughout his empire. • You will define the Hellenistic Era and the legacy left behind by Alexander the Great.

Persians set out to conquer the Greek city-states but failed. • The Macedonians were people who lived north of Greece. • With the fall of Athens and Sparta weakened from the Peloponnesian War, Greece was opened for an invasion. • Macedonians were farmers. Raised sheep and horses. • Under King Philip II they became a superpower to be reckon with and conquered all of Greece in the 300’s B.C.   7. King Phillip II of Macdonia • Became king of Macedonia in 359 B.C. • Created a strong army • Planned to unite the Greek city-states under his rule and destroy the Persian Empire. • Easily conquered all of Greece. 2.What area in Greece did King Phillip not control?

  8. 3. Who did Alexander believed he was a descendant from? Who is Alexander?? • King Phillip was killed before he could attack Persia. • Son, Alexander, became king. • Alexander prepares to attack Persia.

War with Persia • Spring of 334 B.C. • Alexander cavalry moved towards Persian forces against King Darius II • Major battles: • Battle at Granicus • Battle at Issus • Invasion of Mesopotamia • Battle of Egypt • Conquers Persia in 327 BC • Began looking at invading India but his men refused to go any further. • Head home to Macedonia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOin08k4KFc • 4. The End of Alexander • On the way home, Alexander and his men crossed a desert. • Many soldiers died from heat and thirst. • In 323 BC Alexander returned to Babylon • The hardship of the journey wrecked Alexander’s health. Suffering from wounds and fever, Alexander died at the age of 32 years old. 5. Do you believe Alexander death a murder or not? Hellenistic Culture spreads • Alexander loved the Greek culture. • At early age, Alexander read the Greek epics and used Achilles as his role model. • As he conquered areas, he spread Greek language, ideas, art, and architecture through Asia and Egypt. • His successes became known as Hellenistic Era. Hellenistic means Greek-like. • He planned to unite Macedonia, Egypt, Asians and Greece into his empire.
