  6. Atlantic Charter (Aug. 1941) • Kept with the ideology of Wilson’s 14 points • No new territory for US or GB • No territorial changes w/out consent of people • People can choose own gov’t • Establish a system of general security

  7. Teheran Conference (Nov. 1943) • First time the “Big 3” meet together • Churchill, Roosevelt & Stalin • Made plans for invasion of France (D-Day) • Tentative plans for dealing w/ Poland and Germany after the war

Potsdam (July 1945) • Stalin, Truman and Attlee • Demilitarization • Denazification • Democracy (?) • War crimes tribunal (Nuremburg trials) • Conflict emerges as Truman expresses disapproval with the pro-Soviet gov’ts that had been set up in Eastern Europe • Stalin says that any freely elected governments in Eastern Europe would be anti-Soviet and he says “that we cannot allow”

  17. Post-War Occupation of Germany • Soviet Union wants to punish Germany b/c of terrible losses suffered during the war • Dismantled factories • Sent heavy machinery, trucks and trains and shipped them to Russia • US spends $13b on rebuilding effort in West Germany and Berlin

  18. Post-War Occupation of Japan • US occupied Japan • Demilitarized and imposed reparations • Reparations suspended, capitalist economy and democratic gov’t established
