  2. Objective: Select materials for five specified parts in a four-stroke engine, for a BMW 3 Series (shown below). This presentation only illustrates the elementary materials engineering considerations, for the selection of suitable materials, given predetermined operational conditions, for five engine components.

Engine Block Material Conclusion: I propose an alloy of the following two Materials: 50% composition by weight Aluminum, 2618, wrought, T4 – Chosen due to its low thermal expansion. 50% composition by weight Magnesium, ZC71, wrought– Chosen due to its high fatigue failure and ease of manufacture.
