Truman tries to extend New Deal • welfare and job programs, low rent houses • raise min wage, job training, public works

Most of Truman’s agenda blocked • Conservative mood: lower taxes, goods • GOP wins Congress: first time since 1928 • Truman vetoes tax cuts • Taft-Hartley Act passes: 80 day cooling off • Truman’s Civil Rights Committee: • They recommend fighting discrimination • Truman ends segregated army • Truman recognizes Israel: old partner
