Types of Government. Totalitarian State. The government has TOTAL power over the people. This is a country with only one political party. People are forced to do what the government tells them and may also be prevented from leaving the country. Autocracy.

  2. Totalitarian State • The government has TOTAL power over the people. • This is a country with only one political party. • People are forced to do what the government tells them and may also be prevented from leaving the country.

  3. Autocracy • Government by a single person having unlimited power; • despotism (domination through threat of punishment and violence).

  4. Dictatorship • ruled by a single leader. • The leader has not been elected and may use force to keep control. • military dictatorship = army is in control.

  5. Monarchy • king or queen / Emperor or Empress • traditional monarchies = monarch has absolute power. • constitutional monarchy = democratic government that limits the monarch's control.

  6. Oligarchy • A government in which a few people such as a dominant clan or clique have power.

  7. Theocracy • religious institution holds power over the government. • Laws are based on religious beliefs.

  8. Democracy • government is elected by the people. • Everyone who is eligible to vote has a chance to have their say over who runs the country.

  9. Republic • type of democracy where people elect leaders to make the laws and govern the country.

  10. Anarchy • situation where there is no government. • Rival groups fight for control

  11. Capitalism • In a capitalist or free-market country, people own businesses and property. • People choose what they buy • most capitalist governments provide education, and welfare services. • Capitalism is usually found in a democracy.

  12. Socialism • Public ownership of all goods • Government distributes the goods to the people based on their needs and not on their work

  13. Communism • the government owns Everything - businesses and farms. • It provides healthcare, education and welfare. • Communism has only Existed with a totalitarian government.
