Business Intelligence • Business Intelligence is the process of transforming data into information and through discovery transforming that information into knowledge” - Gartner Group • Business Intelligence is a discipline of developing information that is conclusive, fact-based and actionable. Business Intelligence gives companies ability to discover and utilize information they already own, and turn it into the knowledge that directly impacts corporate performance” - IBM

Business Intelligence • Tactical vs. Strategic: The difference between operational systems (supporting day-to-day operations) and business intelligence systems. • TWO EXAMPLE SCENARIOS • A local bank branch manager views a report generated by a database application at the end of a workday and decides to order more cash from the central vault, due to the low cash level in the local branch shown in the report. The data about cash was gathered and organized in a database, analyzed into a report that was disseminated to the manager who then made a decision based on it. • A CEO of a large bank views a comprehensive analysis report describing the performance of each branch for the past five years and makes a decision to close a particular bank branch. The data about branches was gathered and organized in a database, analyzed into a report that was disseminated to the CEO who then made a decision based on it.

Data Warehousing • Need for Data Warehousing • Integrated, company-wide view of high-quality information. • Separation of operational and analytical systems and data. • Data Warehouse • A foundation of a comprehensive business intelligence system • In general, data warehouse is designed and implemented to answer these TWO fundamental questions: • Who is buying what? • When and where are they doing so? • More specific • Who [which customer] is buying [buying / using / delivering / shipping / ordering / returning] what [products / services] from where [outlet / store / clinic / branch] on what occasion [when], how [creditcard / cash / check / exchange / debit] and why [causation]?

  6. Data Mining • Data Mining is the process of discovering meaningful new correlations, patterns and trend by sifting through large amounts of data stored in repositories, using pattern recognition technologies as well as statistical and mathematical techniques” - Gartner Group

Motivation for the Program • The hardware and software needed to build and maintain data warehouses, as well as to undertake other business initiatives is now accessible to businesses of all sizes. • There is a great need for managers who understand how to design data warehouses and apply business intelligence techniques to extract information that can be used to understand business trends and market behavior.
