  1. The Effect of Caffeine on Plant Growth By Sarah Steinbock

  2. How does water, low amounts of caffeine, medium amounts of caffeine, or high amounts of caffeine effect the growth of plants? Problem Statement

  3. If I add caffeine when I water the plants, then they will grow faster because the caffeine will give them more energy and vitamins. Hypothesis

  4. What’s some background information? • Spider plants are known to be easy to grow and have very little problems • Most common known house plant • Will grow in settings from shady to partial sunlight • Preferred bright lighting • Temperature should not be below 50 degrees • Fast growing plant • Some think caffeine helps plants grow at higher rates • Some believe it stunts growth

More background information • When tested, people don’t know if something else stunts or increases growth rate • Caffeine is found in many plant species where it acts as a natural pesticide • caffeine protects plants from insect or fungal attacks • caffeine is excreted by the plant into the soil and reduces growth of competing plants and bacteria.

  6. Materials • Caffeine Tablets • Water • Soil • 8 gardening pots • Ruler • 8 Spider plants • Dixie cups

  7. 1. For this project, the variable is the different amounts of caffeine in the plants. This will be tested with caffeine tablets. The controlled variable is the spider plants, the amount of water, the room temperature, the amount of soil, and the amount of sunlight. Get 8 gardening pots, and fill them all with equal amounts of soil. 2. Plant spider plant in each pot. 3. Label pots “water 1”, “water 2” “low 1” “low 2” “medium 1” “medium 2” “high 1”, and “high 2” 4. Measure the height of the spider plants in each pot on day 1. Record the heights in a table. 5. Over the next 10 days, water the pots once a day. Also, put the right amount of caffeine into the labeled pots. 6. Measure plants every day for the next 10 days. Record all data in a table. 7. See which is most effective, water, little caffeine, medium caffeine, or high caffeine. Record all data.

  9. Discussion • No amount of caffeine had the best effect, just water • High amounts of caffeine killed the plants • Medium amounts had a very bad effect on them • Low amounts did not kill them, but it did stunt the growth a little bit

  14. Conclusion If I add caffeine when I water the plants, then their growth will be stunt, and end up dying. MY HYPOTHESIS WAS WRONG -High amounts of caffeine killed the plants -Medium amounts of caffeine had a very bad effect on the plants -Low amounts barely had an effect, but they did stunt the growth a little bit -Water had the best effect

  15. In the future….. • Would water them at same time everyday • Use the same exact temperature water every time
