  7. “There is an epidemic of allergic disease in Europe and elsewhere in the world.” Peter Burney, Vice President of research at the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network (GALEN)

  8. Target Group: • 20% of the world population suffers from allergic diseases • Asthma is caused by allergies in 50% of adults and at least 80% of affected children. • 150 million people worldwide suffer from asthma • 1 out of 3 European citizens suffer from some allergy related condition

  9. Non intrusive, transparent system, easy to use and understand. • Allergens move constantly because of wind currents. • People have different sensitivities to the various allergens. • There are people with allergies in food and medicine. Design Considerations

  10. Measures the concentration of allergens in the air. • Interprets the measurements according to the user’s sensitivity. • Computes the risk factor for an allergic reaction. • Warns the user of rising risk to his health. • Offers assistance to people with allergies in food or medicine.

  11. How this technology helps us Live Healthier Lives • Allergic symptoms include: • So preventing allergic crisis helps people live healthier lives • Heart palpitations • Hives • Impaired sense of smell • Vomiting • Watery, itchy, crusty or red eyes • Wheezing • Dark circles under or around the eyes • Dermititis • Depression • Absentmindedness • Anaphylaxis • Asthma • Joint aches • Muscle pains • Nasal congestion • Sneezing • Swelling (angioedema) • Throat hoarseness • Rapid pulse • Rhinorrhea (runny nose) • Ringing, popping or fullness in the ears • Dizziness • Eczema • Embarrassment • Vomiting • Watery, itchy, crusty or red eyes • Wheezing • Absentmindedness • Anaphylaxis • Asthma • Dark circles under or around the eyes • Dermititis • Depression • Dizziness • Eczema • Embarrassment • Heart palpitations • Hives • Impaired sense of smell • Joint aches • Muscle pains • Nasal congestion • Rapid pulse • Rhinorrhea (runny nose) • Ringing, popping or fullness in the ears • Sneezing • Swelling (angioedema) • Throat hoarseness • Shortness of breath • Skin Rashes • Sleep difficulties • Shortness of breath • Skin Rashes • Sleep difficulties • Nasal polyps • Nausea • Postnasal drainage (postnasal drip) • Burning eyes • Constipation • Coughing • Irritability/behavioral problems • Itchy nose and/or throat • Itchy skin • Tingling nose • Tiredness • Vertigo • Irritability/behavioral problems • Itchy nose and/or throat • Itchy skin • Nasal polyps • Nausea • Postnasal drainage (postnasal drip) • Diarrhea • Difficulty swallowing • Distraction, difficulty with concentration • Burning eyes • Constipation • Coughing • Fatigue • Flushing • Headaches • Tingling nose • Tiredness • Vertigo • Fatigue • Flushing • Headaches • Diarrhea • Difficulty swallowing • Distraction, difficulty with concentration

  12. User Measurements System Architecture

  13. System Components Server Application Pocket PC add-on Pocket and Desktop PC Application

  14. Pocket PC add-on Custom made device used to acquire andtransmit the essential data for allergen identification and concentration measurement Measurements are performed by an electronic-nose sensor The resulting signals are digitized, filtered andamplified by an ADuC834 microprocessor Data are sent to the AllergyON! Pocket PC application via RS232 interface.

  15. Prototype suggestion Pocket PC Application

  16. System Components Server Application Pocket PC add-on Pocket and Desktop PC Application

  17. Pocket PC Application Main control unit, processing and recognition module, user interface • Performs : • Signal Processing • Allergen identification and concentration measurement • Risk assessment Graphical representation of measurement data through maps and graphs Use of Web Services to obtain weather and pollen forecast data, food ingredient, restaurant menus and drug substances information

  18. Pattern Recognition algorithm • Signal filtering • Data normalization • Change in electrical resistance, sensor by sensor • The vector of values represents the allergen’s fingerprint • Pattern recognition algorithms • Allergen Classification and concentration estimation

  19. Risk Assessment algorithm Pattern Recognition Results Fuzzy system Risk Factor User’s Sensitivities

  20. Desktop Application Stand-alone operation of the pocket PC add on for room monitoring

  21. System Components Server Application Pocket PC add-on Pocket and Desktop PC Application

  22. Server Application • MS SQL Server 2005 Database • User information • Food ingredients database • Drug ingredients database • IIS 5.0 Web Server • Web Services for the exchange of the data between client (Pocket PC) - server • Sites for registration, system browsing, help

  23. Web Services • Help food allergic people by: • Obtaining food ingredients data, based on specified food name • Providing international cuisine info, helping users who travel • Allowing for restaurant menu download • Help drug allergic people by displaying substances contained in any specified drug • Access to weather and pollen forecast data

  24. Scenario #2: A romantic dinner… • Aiding food allergic people through Web Service use • Advice to drug allergic people • Scenario #1: A walk in the open… • Data acquisition simulation • Risk level change and user warning • Data graphs and maps System Demonstration

  25. Why is the system innovative? • The only mobile system that combines airborne-allergens and allergies in food and medicine • Personalized, real time risk assessment (in contrast with generic, once-a-day pollen count information) • The only application of e-nose sensors on allergen detection

  26. Why is the system effective? • Easy-to-use • Not a source of annoyance • On-the-spot advice • Compact-size, low-weight sensor module

  27. Why is the system effective? (larger scale effects) • Enhances social life of allergic people • By preventing allergic seizures: • Minimal hospitalization • Reduced medication • Substantial savings in health resources • 16.7 million office visits to health care providers in the USA • 11.3 billion $ annual cost for asthma treatment in the USA

  28. How does the system adapt to the user? • Risk assessment according to user’s sensitivities • Food and drug advice according to the user’s allergen specifications • The system is aware of the user’s location and provides location specific information

  29. Technologies/Resources Servers: • IIS 5 • SQL Server 2005 Development Tools: • Visual Studio .NET 2005 Professional Edition • KEIL Embedded Development Tools Add-on Hardware: • Analog Devices ADuC834 Microcontroller • Nanomechanical active sensors Other Technologies: • .NET Framework 2.0 • C# • ADO.NET • ASP.NET • Mappoint Web Services • XML Web Services

  30. Integration/testing of our nanosensor • Cross-case testing & evaluation of feedback from the target group • Fine tuning of Pattern Recognition models • Integration with existing mobile public network services Further Development
