Famous people from Lombardy. Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio ( 28th September 1571 – 18th July 1610). Caravaggio was an Italian artist. He worked in Rome, Naples, Malta and Sicily between 1593 and 1610. He painted in the Baroque style. He was really good at painting this way.

  2. Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (28th September 1571 – 18th July 1610) Caravaggio was an Italian artist. He worked in Rome, Naples, Malta and Sicily between 1593 and 1610. He painted in the Baroque style. He was really good at painting this way.

  3. Antonio Stradivari(1644 – 18th December 1737) He was an Italian luthier and a crafter of string instruments such as violins, cellos, guitars, violas, and harps. Stradivari is considered one of the best artisan in this field.

  4. Alessandro Manzoni (7 th March 1785 – 22 nd May 1873) • He was a poet and novelist. He is famous for the novel The Betrothed (I Promessi Sposi ) one among the masterpieces of world literature. The novel is also a symbol of the Italian Risorgimento, both for its patriotic message and because it was a fundamental milestone in the development of the modern, unified Italian language. In 1860 King Victor Emmanuel II named him a senator. Giuseppe Verdi wrote a Requiem to honour his memory.

  5. The Blessed Pope John XXIII(25th November 1881-3rd June 1963) Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was the 262nd Pope from 1958 to 1963. Pope John named the first African Cardinal, the first Japanese Cardinal, the first Filipino Cardinal and the first Venezuelan Cardinal. He was the first Pope to make an official visit to the President of the Italian Republic at the Quirinal Palace. Pope John brought together the church's bishops and cardinals in Vatican Council II.

  6. Pope Paul VI26th September 1897 – 6th August 1978 Giovanni Battista Montini was the 263rd Pope from 1963 until his death. He was a spiritual leader . He was the first Pope to fly by plane. In 1964, Paul was the first Pope to travel to the Holy Land, flying first to Amman in Jordan and then travelling by car to Jerusalem. In 1970, the Pope visited Australia, the Phillipines, and Indonesia.

  7. Dario Fo (24th March 1926) He is a satirist, playwright, theater director, actor and composer. He currently operates a theatre company with his wife, actress Franca Rame. He was awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize in Literature.

  8. Claudio Abbado (26th June 1933 ) He is an Italian conductor. He worked with many of the world’s greatest orchestras. He is also well-known for his work with young musicians. He started the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra.

  9. Giorgio Gaber(25 January 1939 - 1 January 2003) He was an Italian singer-songwriter, actor and playwright. He was also an accomplished guitar player. The new underground auditorium of the Pirelli Tower in Milan is dedicated to him.
