NETS • 21 FTE • The Network Engineering and Telecommunications Section (NETS) is responsible for the planning, engineering, installation, operation, and maintenance of state-of-the-art networking and data communications facilities at NCAR/UCAR. • The support of these facilities includes: • Network hardware and software troubleshooting • Network error detection, load monitoring, and network tuning • Maintaining network documentation and databases • Reconstructing and reconfiguring networks to meet optimal performance needs • Expanding networks to meet increased numbers of users and increased bandwidth requirements • Consulting with network users regarding optimal network usage • Evaluating new networking technologies and equipment • Tracking and coordinating all network project activities via a work-request/work-tracking system • Managing the FRGP including BiSON, NLR, and Quilt activities • NETS supports over 117 logical networks, approximately 210 monitorable network devices, and over 3000 network-attached devices at NCAR/UCAR. • NETS provides a vital service to the atmospheric and oceanographic research communities by linking supercomputing resources to scientists at NCAR and throughout the university research community. These activities are essential to the effective use of NCAR/UCAR's scientific resources, and they foster the overall advancement of scientific inquiry

UCAR-wide Enterprise Services • .5 FTE • .25 FTE Email Support • .25 FTE Directory Services • Provides and continually refreshes • e-mail delivery • domain name service • license service • directory services (future) Which are key service components of the IT infrastructure that all UCAR employees depend on.

Computer Security • 2.0 FTE • Provides the ongoing analysis of network/computing security threats • Engineers solutions and coordinates efforts across the organization to prevent, detect, respond to and report computing security exploits • Coordinates training and education efforts to maintain computing security

Computer Security • Other incidents don't fit into a measurable trend, but are significant for UCAR: • The Blaster worm, which rapidly compromised over 120 UCAR MS Windows systems • The Geosciences community attacks, with an active threat compromised our supercomputers and over 150 other UCAR UNIX systems > in at least two episodes.

Communications PoolPurchased Services Purchased Services include: • $856,260 NETS – Networking and Front Range GigaPoP (FRGP) expenses (i.e. Cisco maintenance, Fiber IRUs, circuits, long distance service, Abilene, NLR, commodity Internet services, etc.) • $51,500 – Enterprise Services – Authoritative Directory Service Solution Software • $17,800 – Security - Maintenance, Software and Licenses • Purchased Services Budget: $925,560

Communications PoolDepreciation & Interest • Depreciation & Interest Budget: $1,258,484 Depreciation & Interest includes: • $1,135,176 – NETS – Networking Projects – Infrastructure, Equipment and Telephones for all buildings (i.e. MLNAC, MINT, FUN, MALT, CG1, CG2, CG3, CG4, FL0, Phone System, general equipment) • $11,333 – Enterprise Services – UCAR Mail Relay System • $111,975 – Security – Intrusion Prevention System, Gatekeeper System, Upgrade to Intrusion Detection System *10 year, 5 year, and 3 year depreciation
