  2. Broaden awareness of the GRCC Institutional Review Board (IRB) for human subjects research • Facilitate expedient review and approval of research proposals involving human subjects Purpose of our presentation

Review and oversee human subjects research • Human subjects research is: • - systematic investigation • - designed to contribute to general knowledge • - often presented/published outside the college • Human subjects research is not: • - classroom surveys for internal use • - data-gathering for service improvement Purpose of the IRB

IRB first established at GRCC in 2007 • Some federal grants require an IRB approval prior to submission • “Rent a IRB” is an option that some schools use (WIRB – Western Institutional Review Board • CITI on-line training certification required for all IRB members (6 hours) History of the GRCC IRB

Membership is outlined by Federal Guidelines (45CFR46) • Current members include: • Robert Leunk (Scientist) (Team Co-chair) • Kevin Dobreff (Non-scientist) • Jim Peterson (Risk Management) • Patti Trepkowski (Institutional commitment/policies) • Susan English (Community Member) (Susan is the Director on Institutional Research at Aquinas College • Cedric Williams • Jennifer Borrello • Sophie Rubin • Tim Hoving • Vicki Maxa • Lisa Dopke • Donna Kragt (Team Co-chair) Current IRB membership

  6. Who needs to submit an IRB application? Two step process – 1. Dean of IRP has the authority to determine if an IRB request will be considered. 2. If it is determined that an IRB request will be considered, the completed application will be moved on to the IRB for review.

  7. Who needs to submit an IRB application? IRB oversees all human subjects research (EXCEPT research conducted to improve practice at GRCC) GRCC Faculty and Staff – Who plan to use the results of their research in partial fulfillment of a degree or certificate at another college or university Outside Researchers – Who would like to use GRCC faculty/staff/students as part of an external research project.

IRB Approval Process Investigator contacts Dean of Institutional Research & Planning for initial screening and overview of process Investigator completes & submits IRB Application IRB reviews proposal and approves or requests clarification - IRB evaluates risks, recruitment, informed consent, data security, privacy and confidentiality provisions - Decision made within 4 weeks of submission IRB Approval letter is provided to investigator Research is reapproved annually Investigator reports any changes to research plan

  9. Approved IRB Applications 2012-2013 – 14 applications were received and approved 2013-2014 – 5 applications have been either approved or are “in process”
