  2. 1 Cor. 12:8-11 “Sign Gifts – How Did We Get Here?” July 28, 2013 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. HOLD THE LINE I Corinthians

  15. 1 Cor. 12:8-11 “Sign Gifts – How Did We Get Here?” July 28, 2013 Church History re: Sign Gifts: “I said (chap. xxv), ‘These miracles were not permitted to last till our times, lest the soul should always seek visible things, and the human race should grow cold by becoming accustomed to things which stirred it when they were novel.’ That is true. When hands are laid on in Baptism people do not receive the Holy Spirit in such a way that they speak with the tongues of all the nations. Nor are the sick now healed by the shadow of Christ’s preachers as they pass by. Clearly such things which happened then have later ceased. But I should not be understood to mean that to-day no miracles are to be believed to happen in the name of Christ. For when I wrote that book I myself had just heard that a blind man in Milan had received his sight beside the bodies of the Milanese martyrs, Protasius and Gervasius. And many others happen even in these times, so that it is impossible to know them all or to enumerate those we do know.” HOLD THE LINE I Corinthians

  19. 1 Cor. 12:8-11 “Sign Gifts – How Did We Get Here?” July 28, 2013 • Scripture to Consider: • 1 Cor. 12; Romans 12; Eph. 4; and 1 Peter 4 • To back up the “continuation” doctrine is simple, regarding scriptural support. • (Isaiah 43:19; Lam 3:22-25) HOLD THE LINE I Corinthians

  20. 1 Cor. 12:8-11 “Sign Gifts – How Did We Get Here?” July 28, 2013 • Experience, Fear, or Ignorance? • Three great dangers confronting the cessation doctrine: • 1) It is an “assumed” doctrine • 2) Lack of desire • 3) A denial of the supernatural IN believers • Luke 9:1,2 says, Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils… and to heal the sick. • Mark 13:34 Jesus compares himself to a man on a journey, leaving the servants in charge (authority), and commands us “STAY AWAKE!” • Act 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. 21. 1 Cor. 12:8-11 “Sign Gifts – How Did We Get Here?” July 28, 2013 • One last Observation: • People often ask/wonder why the “sign” gifts aren’t more visible at CRC. • Our leaders don’t yet possess some of the gifts • Not a lot of experience • The sign gifts ARE more visible and exercised in some of our home groups.
