  2. ABE:How can accurate research help students to find out REAL facts from history?”Today we will explore a process that you can use to explore myths versus legends in United States history using research.

  3. ABE: • You don’t have to travel back in time to find out the facts when conducting research. You just need to know how to find valid, reliable information.

  4. MELISSA • Mr. President, has there ever been a time in history when the information was misguided or incorrect?

  5. ABE • Dear student, what we often take for fact actually turns out to be fiction. It is so important to conduct research and to investigate a matter thoroughly and by using these steps you can find out what is…”honest” and what is often not the most “honest” of information.

  6. ABE • Step 1- Identify a dispute about events in the past and try to explore one related in your community, county, or state.

  7. ABE Step 2- Indentify what you need to learn regarding the historic event or fact.

  8. ABE • Step 3- Do the research. Learn how to do effective research. Be sure to rate your resources regarding how each one provides the most authentic proof.

  9. ABE Exploring the past can be an adventure that can lead to the unfolding of new information and can (believe it or not) provided enough evidence that might turn some of histories greatest facts into mere fiction.   10. ABE In fact my address at Gettysburg is surrounded by fiction. I did not write it on the back of an envelope on my way to Gettysburg like everyone thinks I did. I wrote down notes and phrases but I did not write to whole speech. I finished my speech in pencil on a second page early that morning. I wanted it to be a tribute to those who had given their lives for our great cause.
