  3. Question 1 Question 1: Click on the United States Map and find California. Now color California yellow on the map at the top of your questions. Once this is done begin your treasure hunt with question 2 and finish with question 22.

  4. Questions 2-3 Let’s go back in history to when California was Alta California. California and Mexico were colonies. Question 2: To which country did these colonies belong? Question 3: Who was the last Mexican appointed governor of California?

  5. Questions 4-5 We’re going on a little historical cyber treasure hunt of one of the most important gold discoveries, in the world, The California Gold Rush. Question 4: Who ran through the streets of San Francisco shouting about the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill on the American River? Question 5: The person in question 4 became one of the wealthiest persons in California. What did he do to become so wealthy?

  6. Questions 6, 7, and 8 Sutter’s Fort was Sacramento’s earliest settlement. The fort became the destination for early settlers to California. Question 6: In which country was Mr. Sutter born? Question 7: In which town was Sutter’s Mill built? Question 8: On which river was Sutter’s Mill built?

  7. Questions 9 - 10 Question 9: The gold rush was an event that changed the west. What was one kind of test that Marshall and Sutter both used to determine whether the gold was real? Question 10: Many people came west looking to get rich by mining gold. Some found gold but more often they found “Fools Gold”. What is Fools Gold and how can you tell the difference between Fools Gold and real gold?

For the next questions, look for the ‘Life of a 49er’ link. Question 13: Does the price of a barrel of flour look cheap or expensive to you? Question 14: Does the price of a blanket look cheap or expensive to you?

  11. Questions 19, 20, and 21 Next, we're going to the Gold Rush Chronicles.One of the first official ways that the miners got their mail was from the Pony Express. Question 19: Who organized the pony-delivered mail in the eastern part of the United States? Question 20: How long did the Pony Express to California last?Question 21: Why do you think the Pony Express was not a financial success?
