  5. Abacus ABACUS. Before the Hindu-Arabic numeration system was used, people counted, added, and subtracted with an abacus a forerunner of today's calculator probably invented by ancient Sumerians in Mesopotamia. (The name comes from the Greek word abax, meaning "board" or "calculating table.") The Greeks and Romans used pebbles or metal disks as counters. They moved these on marked boards to work out problems. Later the counters were strung on wires mounted in a frame.

  7. The Battle In 1298, Marco Polo was captain of a Venetian galley that participated in a battle between Venice and Genoa. Marco was taken prisoner by Genoese. While in jail he told a fellow prisoner about his adventures and travels.
