  3. How Are Data Used to Understand and Improve Overall Instruction Data are continually used to screen for special program participants. Data are analyzed by faculty to differentiate instruction for individual student needs. The faculty uses the data to focus on CSI goals.

About the TerraNova Third Edition The Third Edition also tests students in five Depth of Knowledge levels. • Recognizing and Recalling • Using fundamental concepts and procedures • Concluding and Explaining • Evaluating, Extending and Making connections • Integrative Thinking and Performance Published by CTB McGraw-Hill, the exam provides information in five areas: • Reading • Language Arts • Mathematics • Science • Social Studies

  6. Interpreting TerraNova Results TerraNova Results may be reported in one of three ways: Percentiles Norm Curve Equivalents (NCEs) Stanines

National Percentile Rank - NP • National Percentile Rank (NP) shows the percentage of students in a comparison group who scored lower than or equal to a given student’s score. • A percentile rank of 74 does not show that a student answered 74% of the questions correctly. It shows the student scored better than 74% of the comparison group.

  8. Understanding Percentile Ranks Sam, as an example, is a 10th grade student. Sam’s Home Report showed a “score” of 74 (NP) .. … … .. … … … ……….. … … . . . . … …… …………… ….. . … … …… … . Sam’s PERCENTILE RANKof 74 represents a relative standing. One can say that Sam performed as well as or better than 74 percent of the comparison group (for TN, this is the norm group).

NCEs: Norm Curve Equivalent raw test “scores” (% correct) • NCEs are derived from percentiles and used for research and averaging purposes. • NCEs place all scores of a group in equal intervals along a “curve”. As a result, half of the scores will be placed below 50 and half above. • Typically, students’ NCE “scores” will be within a few points of their NP (comparison) scores same scores as NCEs . . ... . . . ... . . . . . . . . ..

  12. National Stanine • Stanine scores range from 1 to 9 and have an average value of 5.

  14. TN Percentile Rank • These scores are used as one piece of info to determine eligibility for Gifted Education, Read 180, and other programs.

  15. Stanine • The AVID Program (middle/high school program) uses stanine scores to help determine eligibility.

  16. Points to Consider • Standardized test scores are only one piece of the information that shows how a student or a school is doing. Teacher Observation Grades TerraNova • The tests for each grade level are different, and should not be compared (i.e., comparing a 7th grade class score to that same group’s 8th grade score).
