ANNUAL REPORT 2006 - 2007 • Highlights • Delivery of Team South Africa to Zone VI Games – Namibia, very successful returning 24 Gold 14 Silver and 10 Bronze medals and an overall 1st position in the Zone. These results were exceptional given the difficult conditions our athletes were faced with. • The successful hosting of the FASU Games and Team South Africa’s performance. We attained 1st position with 53 Gold Medals whilst Algeria was 2nd with 18 Gold Medals. • Delivery of Team South Africa to the ANOCA Zone VI Games – Maseru, Lesotho. Also very successful with 14 Athletes returning 14 Medals, 9 Gold, 4 Silver and 1 Bronze.

  3. OTHER ACTIVITIES • Olympic Day Run – In conjunction with McDonalds the worldwide partner of IOC the event was held at the Johannesburg Zoo. Approximately 500 participants from families and children from homes were present. It is an event that helps to spread the spirit of Olympism. • SA Sports Awards – An annual event that is run in partnership with SRSA, SABC Sport and SASCOC. The awards recognise excellent performance from Athletes, Coaches and Administrators. SRSA and SASCOC are engaging with SABC Sport to further enhance the quality of this event.

  4. OTHER ACTIVITIES Cont. • Jack Cheetham Awards – An award designed as a reward to a National Federation that runs a sustainable development programme. The award is sponsored by Murray and Roberts to the tune of R300 000-00 to the winning National Federation to be used towards further development. • Hall of Fame – The inaugural induction was done in 2006. This is a partnership between the South African Sports Hall of Fame (SASHOF) and SASCOC. Here again efforts are being made to improve the processes involved in identifying new inductees.

FINANCIAL REPORT Compliance with Companies Act GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Practices) IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) SASCOC’s Policy and Procedures and Accounting Policies. Auditors Deloitte and Touche Audit Committee approved AFS 27 July 2007 – Board Approved 3 August 2007 Audited Financial Statements were circulated and the books were available for inspection at the SASCOC offices from Monday and Tuesday 13 -14 August 2007 respectively. There were no queries

  15. All Africa Games Feedback • Team South Africa, a contingent of 504 people met the challenges of Algeria as true ambassadors of our country. They displayed true grit in overcoming the conditions and returning 181 medals, 61 Gold, 66 Silver and 54 Bronze retaining 3rd position overall on the medals table. • The Chef de Mission in consultation with our Minister of Sport took the decision to order food from an outside caterer given the challenge faced in the village. We would like to thank the Minister for his support.

  16. All Africa Games Feedback Cont • Team SA was also faced with the challenge of not being able to field the 4 x 400m Athletics relay team as athletes left Team SA without permission. On our return the issue was raised and resolved with ASA. • We also would like to place on record our sincere thanks and appreciation to Ambassador Moloi and the Embassy staff in Algiers for their tremendous support.

SA GAMES 2007 UPDATE • All Provinces participated in the Games, which was very successful. • Kwa-Zulu Natal was declared champions for the 1st time eclipsing the dominance of Gauteng Province. • SASCOC and SRSA are presently evaluating the sporting codes that make up the games presently, with a view to aligning to the priority sport.

ACTIVITIES 2007/2008 Cont. • SASCOC is also focused on the delivery of the following aspects: • National Academy • Governance Charter for Sport • Empowerdex to develop a measurement tool to evaluate the transformation achievements of National Federations • Engaging with SRSA to finalise the adjusted national colours regulations • Engaging with SRSA to finalise the management of School Sport in relation to National Federations.

SELECTION POLICY • SASCOC uses the two tier selection policy system advocated by the IOC • 1st tier: Selection through world standard qualification • 2nd tier: Selection through principle of universality related to continental qualification • Eg. Hockey – qualified through Africa, standard in Africa not very high therefore Hockey’s final 16 must have a minimum of 6 black players. • SASCOC determines the selection policy in the year preceding the Olympic games after consultation with the National Federation

INSPECTION VISITS • Two inspection visits to Beijing • Meetings were held with BOCOG • The sports facilities and the athletes village are of excellent quality • We also visited Daegu, Korea to explore the opportunity for a base camp for Team South Africa – Visit proved very successful • We will base our team in Korea and move the athletes into the village three days before competition

PREPARATION PROCESS • Funding in this quadrennial has been sourced from: SRSA, NLDTF, IOC and SASCOC • This funding targeted in the main the AAG and OG • Support to athletes has encompassed the following: • Individual athlete grant • Scientific and medical testing and intervention • Training camps • Coaching expertise • International exposure • Equipment support • Technological support

COMPARATIVE ASSESSMENT Cont. • Aquatics has been most successful to date with 23 qualified athletes at an average cost of R275 000 per athlete • The potential medalists are those that are presently ranked in the top 5 in the world at an average cost of R1 000 000 per medal • Athletics in the meantime have qualified 10 athletes at an average cost of R1 300 000 per athlete. Note however that Athletics can still qualify athletes up to July 2008 • Medal contenders presently ranked in the top 5 in the world are 3 athletes at an average cost of R4 400 000 per medal

COMPARATIVE ASSESSMENT Cont. • Badminton have qualified 4 athletes at an average cost of R500 000 per athlete without medal potential as they are not ranked in the top 5 in the world • Boxing has qualified 1 athlete for a total spend of R3 300 000 without medal potential as he is not ranked in the top 5 in the world • Rowing have qualified 5 athletes at an average spend of R1 300 000 per athlete • Medal contenders presently ranked in the top 5 in the world are 2 athletes at an average cost of R3 200 000 per athlete

  49. PARALYMPIC GAMES • The Paralympic Games are scheduled from 6 to 17 September 2008 • There are 20 sports on the programme in Beijing • We expect to qualify 9 sport
