  3. Was post World War II Communism qualitatively different from its pre-war incarnation? • Fueled by a stunning victory • Legitimacy from its alliance with the west – Democratic by association • Realpolitik vs. Revolution • The particular fusion of messianism and Marxism still remained however.

Who could provide succor for the war ravaged countries? • Communists, Popular Fronts, Socialist movements were springing up all over Europe and beyond • France, Greece, Italy, China, Latin America • Soviet geostrategic competence and just entitlement. • Weakness nonetheless – ideological, military, politically.
