Episode 13: Nausicaa, Mary and Rebirth • In Joyce’s Ulysses, Bloom meets Gerty at a time when he has been buffeted and bashed by the tempests of daily life. • She awakens and arouses him both mentally and sexually. • Clothed in blue and white, the reader is aware of her symbolic connection to St. Mary. • Gertysymbolizes a complex connection between purity, eroticism and rebirth/redemption or an awakening of Bloom’s understanding of himself and others. • Bloom’s interaction with Gertybegins and signals his literal and figurative journey home at the end the day 16 June, 1904.
