  2. Juan Ponce de Leon was born in Spain in 1460 (we are not sure about the date.) He became an explorer and actually sailed with Columbus on his second voyage. Ponce de Leon did not return to Spain with Columbus, but chose to stay in Hispaniola.

  3. Ponce de Leon heard stories about gold in Borinquen or what we know now as PuertoRico. Ponce de Leon led a group of men to Puerto Rico and took over the island. He claimed this land for Spain and the people eventually made him the Governor. What do you think governor means? -A person in charge of a settlement or a community.

  4. While Ponce de Leon was governor of Puerto Rico, he had heard many stories about riches and the “Fountain ofYouth” on an island called Bimini. The Fountain of Youth was a legendary spring that gave people who drank the water eternal life and health. Why do you think people would want to find a “Fountain of Youth?”

  5. In March of 1513 Ponce de Leon took three ships: the Santa Maria, the Santiago, and the San Cristobal and about 200 men and set out for Bimini. In April, after many stops, they finally reached St. Augustine on the coast of Florida.

  6. Ponce de Leon named the land “Pascuda de Florida,” or the Feast of Flowers, because he first spotted the land on Palm Sunday. St. Augustine would become the first Europeansettlement in mainland America. Ponce de Leon died in 1521 from a wound that he suffered in a fight with Native Americans.
