Read over the words, rearranging if you would like. Read aloud as a poem, adjusting as necessary. Heard, G. (1999). Awakening the heart: Exploring poetry in elementary and middle school. Heinemann: Portsmouth, NH.
Instructions – Due Mon., 2/8/10 1. Copy the 6 Room Poem instructions onto lined paper for your notes. 2. Make a foldable (see example provided). Fold letter size white paper into six (6) squares. Label each square to correspond with a room from the six room poem instruction (example: Room 1 – Image). 3. Look at the photo and fill in each Room on your foldable by answering the questions or providing information. 4. When you are done filling in all six Rooms on your foldable, review the information… then create your own original poem on a separate piece of paper. 5. You may use plain white letter size or lined notebook paper. It may be any style of poem you want to create. Any length. This is your poem reflecting your experience of viewing the photo of the former American slave. 6. You want to add color or draw on the poem. 7. Staple your poem to the foldable. Be sure your name, date and class period are on both papers. Turn in to the Absent Drawer!
