  1. A Baker on the Rise A Guide to the Life of a Medieval Baker By Ambika Gadhvi

  2. A Bit About Me My name is Ava Merygold and I am 16 years old. I have a younger sister called Lynette, who lives with my mother. I live with my husband Allister. We live in one of the smallest houses (if you can even call it that) in the town. A tragic thing happened 10 years ago, when I was only 6. My beloved father died fighting for our country at war. My family haven’t been the same since.

  3. Housing • Our house contains one small room with one mattress stuffed with straw and a small window opening that is covered with linen soaked in linseed oil, as windows are much too expensive for my family to afford. • The second room has a small fireplace to cook our food on and some stools to sit on. The roof is thatched and has a hole cut out of the top for the fireplace. Only half the house has structured timber and the other half is made of wickerwork and plaster. We certainly don’t have any furniture as it is terribly expensive.

  4. Housing Location • We work for the King, but luckily we don’t have to live in the castle. • Our house is about a 1 hour walk away from the castle. • All the bakeries must be easily accessible by the townspeople as some use the ovens to cook their food on.

  5. Being a Baker • Being a baker is definitely one of the better jobs in York. You don’t have to get all muddy and dirty like the peasants do. • There are of coarse some down sides to being a baker. The main one is probably that I have to wake up every morning when it is still dark, to the sound of the rooster crowing. Another is that my sister and I have to work extremely hard or we get severely punished by the King.

  6. Being a Baker - Mornings • I wake up every morning at 1:30am to prepare the families meals for the day. Then at 2am Lynette and I make breakfast for Allister my mother and ourselves. We usually eat coarse dark bread with some meat such as pork or trapped rabbit and sometimes green vegetables. My sister and I leave for the castle at 3am, to reach there by 4am when we start work.

  7. Being a Baker – Work at the Castle • Lynette and I take turns preparing and kneading the dough for each other. We knead many different types of bread in a day. White bread for the rich, and rye bread for the poor. We then bake the bread, and once it has finished the servants, peasants and nobles come to collect it.

  8. That’s my life!
