  4. Introductory Craft Skills (Core) • 4 weeks • Required to enroll in the Intermediate Construction Trades (ICT), Highway/Heavy Construction (HHC) or Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) trades programs

  5. Introductory Crafts Skills Curriculum • Basic Safety, OSHA-10, CPR and First Aid • Introduction to Construction Math, Hand and Power Tools, Construction Drawings and Materials Handling • Basic Rigging (ropes, chains, hoists, loaders, and cranes) • Basic Communication and Employability Skills

  6. Intermediate Construction Trades (ICT) • 12 weeks + 4-week Core Curriculum (16 weeks total) • Optional paid internship • Average starting salary: $23,000-$26,000 • 26% growth through 2020

  7. ICT Curriculum • Orientation to the trade, building materials, hand and power tools • Fasteners and adhesives • Reading plans and elevations • Flooring systems • Wall, ceiling and roof framing • Concrete • Reinforcing materials and forms • Windows and exterior doors • Basic stair layout

  8. Highway/Heavy Construction (HHC) • 12 weeks + 4-week Core Curriculum (16 weeks total) • Optional paid internship • Average entry level salary: $26,000 – $30,000 • 10% growth expected through 2020 • In partnership with MoDOT

  9. HHC Curriculum • Trucks, heavy equipment, cranes and forklifts • Below grade construction, earthmoving • Plant operations, paving, structures • Teamwork, following directions, planning and scheduling, problem solving

  10. HHC Curriculum, Cont. • Inspecting, examining and recording, and craftsmanship • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Permits and Testing for license • Flagger certification

  11. Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) • 12 weeks + 4-week Core Curriculum + 4-week Required Internship (20 weeks total) • HVAC Technician average starting salary: $30,000 • 33% increase in positions expected through 2020

  12. HVAC Curriculum • Intro to HVAC • Trade Mathematics • Basic Electricity • Intro to Heating, Cooling and Air Distribution Systems • Basic Copper, Plastic and Carbon Steel Piping Practices • Soldering and Brazing

  13. HVAC Curriculum, Cont. • Alternating Current • Compressors • Refrigerants & Oils • Leak Detection • Evacuation, Recovery, & Charging • Metering Devices • Heat Pumps • Basic Maintenance

  14. HVAC Curriculum, Cont. • Chimneys, Vents & Flues • Sheet Metal Duct Systems • Fiberglass and Flexible Duct Systems • Commercial Airside Systems • Air Quality Equipment • Intro to Hydronic Systems

  15. HVAC, Curriculum Cont. • Basic Electronics • Basic Installation Practices • Troubleshooting Gas Heating and cooling • EPA-608 (handling of Freon) • Apprentice license and 400 hours toward Journeyman license. 

  16. Trades Entrance Criteria • Valid Driver’s License • Successful completion of one-week Orientation. • 8th grade reading and math levels on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) • Interest in working with a variety of hand and power tools and an ability to get along with crew members

  17. Trades Entrance Criteria, Cont. • Medical clearance • Physical tolerance for light and moderate work • Lifting requirement range of 5 to 40 lbs • Must pass a drug screen to participate in the Trades Internship

Specific Trades Entrance Criteria • Intermediate Construction Trades (ICT) • 17½ years of age or older • Highway/Heavy Construction HHC) • 18 years of age or older • High school graduation or equivalency • Strong preference given to racial and ethnic minorities, females and individuals with economic disadvantages

  19. Specific Trades Entrance Criteria • Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) • 18 years of age or older • Minimum score of 56% (69% or higher preferred) on the Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test, Form S, during one-week Orientation to program
