  4. Prompt #1 • What does the nervous system do? Explain in 2-3 sentences.

  5. The Nervous System • Controls the body • Broken into: • Central Nervous System (CNS) • Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

  6. How does information travel through the N.S.? • Sends signals (chemical & electrical) • Where are each of these taking place?

  7. Electrical Impulse

  8. Important Functions • Nucleus: • fuels the cell; gives it energy • Myelin Sheath: • Speed up electrical impulses • Protect the axon

  9. Neurotransmitters • Chemicals produced in the cell • Released and have two options: • Info is passed to new cell • Transmission stops (inhibition)

  10. Neurotransmitters (cont.) • Oversupply or undersupply has been linked to diseases: • Oversupply • acetylcholine (movement, memory)  paralysis and Alzheimer’s • Dopamine (learning, emotional arousal, movement)  schizophrenia • Undersupply • Dopamine  Parkinson’s • Norepinephrine (memory, learning) & serotonin (mood)  depression
