  5. Why is your student taking this class? As a junior your student took a test called the EAP (Early Assessment Program) as part of your CST. Scores on the EAP fall under three categories: Ready, Conditional, and Not Ready. Students who score Ready on the EAP are considered well-prepared for college English courses at all CSU schools, and therefore do not need to take the placement test or any remedial English classes prior to starting their coursework in college. Students who scored Conditional are required to take some steps to move themselves up to Ready before starting their English coursework at any CSU college, or at Fresno City College. In order to move from Conditional to Ready, a student may do ONE of the following:

  6. *Score a 500 or above on the Critical Reading portion of the SAT *Score a 22 or above on the English ACT *Pass the AP Composition or AP Literature Exam with a 3 or above *Successfully complete the ERWC course

  7. Therefore, your student is in this class because he or she did not reach a score of Ready on the EAP. This class will seek to improve their skills in analytical reading and writing, and if they successfully complete this course, they will be able to waive taking the EPT (Early Placement Test) and any remedial classes in English before beginning their coursework in college. This only applies to schools within the CSU system and Fresno City College. Willow International, Reedley College, and the UC system do not accept ERWC as a suitable means for waiving their placement tests and remedial classes.

  8. Homework Load • Students should have homework for English on each day that we meet. On days that no specific homework is given, students should spend 30 minutes reading their independent reading novels. Students are responsible for 300 pages of independent reading for each 6-week grading period.

  9. Make-Up Work • Students may only turn in late assignments that were assigned during the current 6-week grading period. Once each grading period ends, the opportunity to make up the assignments from that grading period is no longer offered.

  10. Use of Technology • We use technology to enhance the learning experience on a daily basis. With the document cameras and projectors provided for us here at Buchanan, we are able to give clear instructions for our visual learners as well as our auditory learners.

  11. Use of Technology (Cont.) • We sometimes make use of smart phones in class to look up definitions online, to conduct preliminary research, and to keep track of students’ assignments. • Nooks and Kindles are encouraged in class as a part of the Independent Reading component.

  12. Use of Technology (Cont.) • Students who do not have access to the internet at home can use the computers in Buchanan’s library to complete their assignments.

  14. I’m from Peachtree City, GA. I went to BYU and majored in Theatre Education with a minor in Music. I have taught Drama at an Intermediate School in St. George, UT for the past four years.I’ve been married to my husband, Brett, for almost a year now. We don’t have any kids (or pets) yet! A new job for my husband last March meant a move to California for both of us… so here we are! I currently teach 4 drama classes and 1 ERWC class. I am the International Thespian Society sponsor.
