What it takes to be a Firebird…. We will spend the first days of school learning our student handbook (Guide to becoming a Firebird ). At the end of our lessons, a quiz will be given on the student handbook. If you make a 100 on the quiz, you may use that as a quiz grade in your classes.

  2. We will spend the first days of school learning our student handbook (Guide to becoming a Firebird). At the end of our lessons, a quiz will be given on the student handbook. If you make a 100 on the quiz, you may use that as a quiz grade in your classes.

  6. Day 1: Survival • New Bell Schedule • Entering/Exiting the building • Assemblies • Cafeteria Procedures • Dress code • Discipline chart

  7. Entering/Exiting the building • Earliest arrival time is 6:45 am. Students enter at “Students First” signs. • School starts at 7:30 am. Drop off takes place in the Spring Hope parking lot. • If students arrive after 7:30 then they check in the office. • Dismissal- 1st load bus riders are dismissed at 2:30. All other students are dismissed at 2:35. If students leave early, that’s a referral. • Students are to walk quietlyon the right side of the hallway.

Assemblies and hall movement • Assemblies- All students will follow the SLANT procedures during assemblies. • Hallway movement- All students will move swiftly and quietly on the right side of the hallway. • Tardies- Students arriving after the bell, will be considered tardy. • Sit up straight. • Lean forward. • Act interested. • Nod occasionally. • Track the speaker.

Cafeteria Procedures • Walk to and from the cafeteria. • Put trash in proper containers. • Keep the floor and tables tidy. • Students are not to "cut in line". • Do not sit on tables. • Talk quietly. • Only the student to whom that number has been issued can use free or reduced lunch numbers.

  12. SNHS DRESS CODE POINTS OF EMPHASIS • No headphones/ear buds will be allowed in the building except in the cafeteria. • No hats will be worn in the building at any time. They are not to be visible or they will be taken. • Students will only be allowed to have Bottled water & Gatorade in the halls and classrooms. • No blankets will be allowed in the building • Shorts or skirts should not be more than 6” above the kneecap.

  13. SNHS Dress Code Points of Emphasis • No sagging pants are permitted. • Straps on shirts must be at least two inches wide. (No spaghetti straps) • Cutoff/Sleeveless/Muscle Shirts with excess gaps under arm areas. • No visible undergarments. • No sleepwear. • No clothing with vulgar, offensive or suggestive language or anything that features controlled substances. • Garments are to be worn over tights and should not be more than 6” above the kneecap.

  16. How can 2 inches of fabric be just enough to keep you out of ISS? NO! YES!

  17. Day 2 of the Firebird: Consequences • If a rule is broken, there will be consequences

  18. 4 Types of Discipline Consequences • Choices- per period only • In school Suspension (ISS)- 1 day or more • Out of School Suspension (OSS)- Out of school 3-10 days • Long Term Suspension- rest of the year

  19. 3 Levels of violations • Level one is interpreted as minor disruption and disrespect infractions, etc.; • Level two is interpreted as more serious infractions such as using profanity, theft, and damage to property, etc.; • Level three is interpreted as major violations such as fighting, bomb threats, use of a weapon, drugs or alcohol offenses, etc. • Discipline consequences will be based on the severity (level of offense) and the total number of times a student has been seen in the office.

  20. 4 Choices opportunities per semester

  21. *Students are assigned to Choices only four (4) times per semester. All other infractions will result in an office referral.

  22. –Fighting – 10 days home and does not have to be a physical act – ATTEMPTING TO INJURE OR INTENTIONALLY BEHAVING IN SUCH A WAY AS COULD REASONABLY CAUSE INJURY TO ANY OTHER PERSON, STUDENT, OR STAFF MEMBERSTUDENTS ARE PROHIBITED FROM DIRECTING TOWARD ANY OTHER PERSON ANY LANGUAGE, WHICH INCLUDES COMMENTS, WRITTEN MESSAGES, THAT THREATENS FORCE, VIOLENCE OR DISRUPTION OR ANY SIGN OR ACT THAT CONSTITUTES A THREAT OF FORCE, VIOLENCE OR DISRUPTION ( different than middle school)

  23. Threats Comments – Verbal, Facebook, Instagram, texts– take all seriously – 99% will result in OSS

  24. Hazing – name calling, harassing, message carriers – WILL PROCESS FOR FIGHTING / Bullying PEER MEDIATIONAnonymous EmailAdministrators

  25. Day 3: Policies • Phone policy • Audio/video equipment • Medicine

  26. Cell phones (Policy 4318) The Nash-Rocky Mount Schools will permit students to possess but not use cell phones and other electronic signaling devices (to place telephone calls, to send or receive text messages or receive pages) during the regularly scheduled school day. Students who possess these devices are to keep them out of view and turned off. All students are required to adhere to the following guidelines regarding cell phones and other electronic signaling devices.

  27. Audio/Video • Radios, CD players, MP3 players, iPods, cameras, or video games should not be brought to school. • The school will provide those items needed for classroom instruction. • Failure to surrender such items will result in a discipline referral. • SNHS will permit the Cafeteria, Gym, and New Building to be a “free texting zone” during Breakfast and the Cafeteria only during Lunch. • All electronic equipment should be put away BEFORE exiting the cafeteria. Thisis aprivilege!

  28. Medicine • Medications during school: Students who require medications at school have 2 options. Please refer to the NRMPS Board Policy 6125 for the complete policy on medication administration. (P. 8-9 of student handbook) • STUDENTS BEING IN POSSESSION OF ANOTHER STUDENT’S MEDICINE OR STUDENTS GIVING ANOTHER STUDENT ANY TYPE OF OVER THE COUNTER OR PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE WILL RESULT IN LONG TERM SUSPENSION!!!!!!

  35. REMEMBER, One point can make all the difference. • 92- B • 69- F • 4 credits- remain a freshman • 28 credits- graduate • 3.0 GPA- pay for college • 93- A • 70- D • 5 credits- promoted to 10th grade • 27 credits- not graduate • 3.5 GPA- possible scholarship Always win by a nose!
