  1. Welcome to Year 11 Extra Science!! Mr Hicks

  2. Year 11 Extra Science • Target grades for this group are • A* • A • B • And if you really flunk it….. C!

  3. Module Number 12 Energy, Force and Communication

  4. Lesson Objectives • To understand what causes static charge. • To appreciate some of the uses of static electricity • To appreciate some of the dangers of electricity • To know what static electricity is

  5. Static Electricity • There are two types of electric charge, POSITIVE and NEGATIVE • Negative charge is made up of electrons from the outside of atoms

  6. Static Electricity • Positive charge is made up from protons. • Protons are usually found in the nucleus of atoms.

  7. Static Electricity • Some materials become charged because friction cause electrons to be pulled off one material and transferred to another material.

  8. Static Electricity • Only electrons can move. • Protons are “stuck” in the middle of atoms. • Materials that have a positive charge are usually things that have “lost” electrons (not gained protons).

  9. Static electricity • You will be given some different materials. See which combination of materials you can use to lift small pieces of paper.

  10. Static electricity • Why can you not generate static charges with metal bars? • Is there a different way of classifying the materials “metals” and “plastics”?

  11. Static electricity • Why must you use an insulating material to generate an electric charge? • Why can you not hold a static charge on a conducting material?

  12. Static electricity • When polythene rod is rubbed with a duster • Electrons are rubbed off the duster onto the rod… • So the rod is left negative… • and the duster positive

  13. Static electricity • When perspex rod is rubbed with a duster • Electrons are rubbed off the perspex onto the duster… • So the rod is left positive… • and the duster negative

  14. Static electricity • Like charges repel • Unlike charges attract. • Electrons will always try and get as far away from each other as possible.

  15. Static electricity • Read page 53 of the text book and explain why EARTHING is important to protect buildings.
