  1. Higher/Int2/Int1Basketball Structures and Strategies Friday 25th Jan 2013

  2. What is the importance of width, depth and mobiltyin attack? • How can you provide: • Width- filling the lanes. • Depth- players ahead of the ball. • Mobilty- making cuts to basket, out-maneuvering opponent. Discuss in pairs

  3. Q1 Describe two methods you used to gather data: • From carrying out testing – • What were your strengths? • What were your weaknesses? • What did you do to address your weaknesses?

  4. Fast Break is aimed to create scoring opportunities by creating overload in attack. It essentially involves players: • Securing the ball/catching the rebound • Outlet pass • Dribble up the middle • Fill the lanes • Ends with layup / uncontested shot • Point guard hangs back • Plenty of options

  6. Q2: Describe the fast break: Higher (6) Int 2 (4) Int 1 (3) Q3 What were the problems you experienced?

  7. Strengths of a fast break : It creates overload in attack and allows you to create easy scoring opportunities It should end in a lay up which is the most successful shot in basketball It allows you to control the tempo of the game The fast break makes every player a threat/potential scorer. It should beat the zone defence as opposition should not be able to get back on time. It provides point guard with lots of options. It is easy to understand and implement.

  8. Model Answer A strategy that we used in basketball was the fast break. The fast break is used to quickly turn from defence to attack ultimately leading to an easy scoring opportunity. A defensive re-bound was our signal start to a fast break. The forwards or centres who would defend around the basket area would secure the ball and immediately look to one of our guards for an outlet pass. At the same time as the re-bound was being taken the guards would split wide. From here the re-bounder plays a flat, fast, accurate pass to the guard who then proceeds to dribble at speed up the middle of the court. The initial re-bounder loops around the ball carrier and fills one of the outside lanes. The second guard fills the other outside lane. With two players either side of the ball carrier, AHEAD of the ball this provides width in attack which in turn should pull out any defenders that have tracked back and create space for the ball carrier. Also, this allows the ball carrier at least two options.

  9. Continued: The ball carrier's first option (A) is to drive straight up court themselves for an easy lay-up or high percentage shot. However, it is likely that at least one defender will track back, therefore, with mobility being a fundamental element of activities it is important that the two wide players and the ball carrier can take this element into consideration to overcome any defenders. The ball carrier should look to play a pass into the furthest forward player in their team (Option B) who can then look to drive past defenders to the basket. The ball carrier's third option (C) is to pass to the furthest forward player who can then pass across to the opposite wide player for an attempted basket. The remaining two players trail behind the play providing depth and support in attack and to crash the boards in case an offensive re-bound is available.

  10. Roles and Responsibilities In every group or team it is important to know and understand what your individual RESPONSIBILITIES are and how your ROLE RELATES to your TEAM-MATES.

  11. Brain storm the roles/responsibilities and qualities of a point guard with your neighbour …

  12. Point Guard – runs the offense • This player needs to be a good ball handler on the squad. He should be able to lead the fast break that develops out of any situation, whether it be a steal, a rebound, or a basket by the opponent. • If the fast break is not there, he must be able to bring the ball up the floor against pressuredefense and set up the Motion offense. • The point guard does not have to be a big scorer, but good at outside shooting… and therefore able to commit defenders. • The point guard should also be an excellent passer. His ability to anticipate the way a play might developis very important, as is his ability. He should have the ability to get everybody involved in the offense. • Needs to communicate effectively in order to achieve results • He should have the ability to penetrate, attract the defense, and finish the play.

  13. Having above average size (height, muscle) is considered advantageous, although size is secondary to situational awareness, speed, quickness, and ball handling skills. • The point guard should have the Intelligence to read the defenses and adjust the offense accordingly • Should use fakes/disguise play • The ideal point guard is an extension of the coach on the court>main voice. • Stays at the top of the key as an option for reverse pass or to track back if a turnover occurs. • Needs to be able to scan ahead (whilst dribbling) • Needs to be an effective decision maker • Cope with pressure

  14. Physical Qualities • Mental Qualities • Tactical Qualties
