  1. STAIR DESIGNby Teresa Madyun Solving Two-Step Equations Solving Multi-Step Equations

  2. Objective Solve equations in one variable that contain more than one operation. Michigan High School Content Expectations (HSCE) Strand #2: Algebra and Functions Standards A1: Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities Students recognize, construct, interpret, and evaluate expressions. They fluently transform symbolic expressions into equivalent forms. They deftermine appropriate techniques for solving each type of equation, inequality, or system of equations, apply the techniques correctly to solve, justify the steps in the solutions, and draw conclusions from the solutions. They apply common formulas.

  3. Introduction The following Stair program is designed for a 9th grade alternative Algebra 1 Class. This program is a stand alone program in which students who have been absent or who need additional practice have an opportunity to catch up or review for the (HSCE) test that is set by the district for common assessment.

  4. Home Page Lesson 1 - One Step Equations Lesson 2 - Two-Step Equations Vocabulary Quiz Extra Practice Online Game ( One-Step Equations ) Extra Practice Online Game ( Two-Step Equations )

  5. Solving One-Step Equations Let’s Solve the following equations Addition/Subtraction X+12 = 20 m - 4 = 14 Multiplication/Division 3x = 15 m/4 = 6 2/5p = 10

  6. X+12 = 20

  7. M - 4 = 14

  8. 2/5p = 10

  9. 3x = 15

  10. M/4 = 6

  11. Solving Two-Step Equations 2x + 12 = 30 4 + m/2 = 10 5 = 2g - 1

  12. 2x + 12 = 30

  13. 4 + m/2 = 10

  14. 5 = 2g - 1

  15. Vocabulary • Additive inverse: The opposite of a number. Two numbers are additive inverse if their sum is zero. • Equation: A mathematical statement that two expressions are equivalent. • Inverse operation: Operations that undo each other • Multiplicative Inverse: The reciprocal of the number • Reciprocal: For a real number a  0 the reciprocal of a is 1/a. The product of reciprocals is 1.
