  1. integrated Safety, Health & Environmental Management Systems December 9th, 2010

  2. iSHEMs- breakdown of agenda Safety: 1)  Lab inspection 2)  Objectives for FY11 3)  Accident report for FY10 4)  CPR training 5)  General safety training 6)  Biosafety cabinets 7)  GelRed 8) MSDS decision 9)  Funding- Our budget EMS: 1)  Bulletin board 2) Website for iSHEM 3)  Chemical reduction 4)  Electronic donation day 5)  Cows for kilowatts 6)  Recycling update

  3. Lab Inspections: Feedback? • All inspections have been performed; report is currently underway • Feedback from inspectors? • Standardized reporting form • Repeat violations (i.e. current/dated chemical inventory)

  4. Goals & Objectives for FY11 • Reduce accidents/injuries and health related problems in the RRC location and continue to implement safety precautions, guidelines and awareness to reduce all health related accidents and injuries within RRC. • Find a better way to broadcast the Business Recovery Plan and to step by step list this plan so that all RRC employees will know how to respond in the case of an unforeseen accident/terroristic threat or natural disaster. • Create a webpage similar to that of the Tifton webpage for iSHEMs which is accessible to anyone on the internet and find a way to broadcast building notes of attendance/dismissal or concern on such site. • Continue to improve our training & response: Safety, EMS, “Right to know,” fire extinguisher use, CPR, chemical training, asbestos awareness, evacuation and Business Recovery Plan. • Find a reliable source to recycle our styrofoam and continue the growth and maintenance of the EMS program.  • Work toward a chemical reduction and electronic recycle day for RRC. • Find a way to dispose of our meat waste other than through landfill

  5. Coming up: • Accident report summary (300A) has to be posted for one month starting Feb 1 on iSHEMs board for review by RRC (until April 30th) • Chemical Inventories due in January • National Pathogen Inventory validation due in January • Training & Response- Work toward better training and response for: • CPR: Select a few from each Unit (in progress) • EAP: Possible free presentation on site, topics include: work place violence, substance abuse, positive workplace interactions, managing change, time management and much more…. etc. (www.FOH4You.com) • Safety: Training for building with UGA’s environmental safety group (Bill Favaloro)! • Business Recovery Plan

  6. Budget: • iSHEM’s training & functions: $3,000.00 • Hazardous waste disposal: $5,000.00 + or – Proposed: ˜$800 for CPR training ˜$500-800 for safety training

  7. Annual streamlined biosafety cabinet checks • Manual 230 (SHEM manual)- • “Measure Face Velocities Annually: Fume hood face velocities must be measured annually to ensure that their performance is acceptable. Hoods that fail the performance test will be taken out of service until repaired.” • Those not serviced recently may initially be more expensive • No travel fee and 24 hour repair turn around time • Yearly checks will be more in line with quote Quote is being prepared by SEC for our review

  8. Suggest to switch from Ethidium Bromide to GelRed • Cat# Product Name Unit Size • Price* • 31010 GelRedTM nucleic acid gel prestaining kit with "200bp" and "1.5Kb" tracking dyes(each kit sufficient for 100 mini gels) • Each • $95 • 41002 GelRedTM Nucleic Acid Gel Stain, 10,000X in DMSO • 0.5 mL • $95 • 41003 GelRedTM Nucleic Acid Gel Stain, 10,000X in water • 0.5 mL • $100 • 41001 GelRedTM Nucleic Acid Gel Stain, 3X in water • 4.0 L • $168 • 31011 GelRedTMnucleic acid gel prestaining kit with "50bp" tracking dye(each kit sufficient for 100 mini gels) • Each • $95 http://www.biotium.com/product/product_info/Newproduct/GelRed_GelGreen.asp

  9. MSDS requirements for RRC: Discussion Require each lab to have their own MSDS in laboratory? • Safety outweighs need to save on paper • In an emergency, 1st floor MSDS log books will not be “hands on” and thumbing through large MSDS log book wastes valuable health/accident related time • Each lab uses different set of chemicals, specific MSDS sheets belong in specific labs • A majority of labs seem to already maintain their own MSDS • Save MSDS sheets off new products to start log book YOUR THOUGHTS?

  10. iSHEMs bulletin board • Check it out! • Sub-basement, outside IT office • Minutes posted via slideshow printout • Current news & awards • OSHA poster & other required postings • Want to add information? Let us know!

  11. RRC’s iSHEMs website: • Work toward a website design off of main USDA page for RRC using Tifton as example: • http://www.ars.usda.gov/Services/docs.htm?docid=12538 • Inclement weather postings • Minutes, forms, data for all RRC iSHEMs business • Posting of RRC Business Recovery Plan • first responders (Who are the first responders? Chain of command) • calling trees (How do we reach our employees in emergency, duty station forms to fill out?) • essential functions (animal care, utilities & sanitary conditions) • employees roles (when to report to work & complete needed work) • How do we account for all of our people, rooms working in, etc? • operation restoration- (Goal: have facility up & running in 30 days?) • Have experience in web design? We need you!

  12. Chemical waste disposal • Lab Packing ServicesLab packing has always been the core business of Chemical Analytics, Inc. • They are trained to handle any of the chemicals that you may have for disposal. Reactive cyanides & sulfides, water reactives, pyrophorics, nitrogen bearing compounds, and peroxide forming chemicals are routinely managed. • Unwanted small containers of waste and unwanted chemicals will be sorted and segregated per DOT hazard class, packaged in UN specification containers that will be labeled and marked to DOT and RCRA requirements. • Required documentation for shipping the waste will be prepared for your review and subsequent signature. The lab packs will be transported in Chemical Analytics, Inc. waste hauling vehicles to our Part B treatment and storage facility in Romulus, Michigan. Subsequent disposal will be at licensed and insured facilities. • Our field crews are prepared to manage all waste types, we can say "We Leave No Waste". All wastes will be removed on the day that service is completed (excluding radioactives). • Unknowns Small containers of accumulated waste and unwanted chemicals that are handled in a cost efficient manner. r small Under the sample exclusion rule found in 40 CFR § 261.4(d), a shipping name will be assigned per the protocol outlined in 49 CFR § 172.101(c)(11). The samples will be packaged in UN specification containers, labeled and shipped to our facility for characterization. The sample and its residuals from testing will be managed as part of CAI's laboratory waste.

  13. RRC Chemical Reduction • Problem: Collection of chemicals in one area for any length of time, clock starts ticking….. • Solution: Collect only items allowed for immediate lab pack, dock to door service • Collect chemicals twice a year, giving re-use of chemicals a chance (“redistribution”)????

  14. Electronic Donation Day Gaming systems T.Vs Cell phones iPods/MP3 players Out of date technology Office equipment Video & cameras Printers Stereo systems Computers

  15. Cows to kilowatts: • Nigeria successfully used this program for benefit • Offset our power bill through energy trade? • Create fertilizer for local farmers • Slaughter house waste benefit from chickens, cows, other research? • Grant capabilities and reaching out to contacts (GA Power’s Green initiative)

  16. Recycling room updates/donations: • Excellent donations • Animal cages to new cat shelter • Old microscopes, centrifuges, PCR machines • Glassware to teach re-use store • Scientific equipment • Continue to help with clean up/organization • Help needed delivering recycled items to appropriate shelters/areas for benefit

  17. Next iSHEMs meeting: • February 2011- any day preferable? • Was earlier time better this time around?
