  2. Genetics and Inherited Occurs when one of several genetic defects makes the body unable to produce or distribute melanin. Melanin- Substance that gives color to hair, skin and eye. Recessive trait Type 1 is inherited I n Chromosome 11 Needs 2 defected chromosomes in order to be present.

  3. What is Albinism? Symptoms Absence of Color in hair, skin and eyes Patchy, missing skin color Symptoms associated with Albinism Crossed eyed (rapid eye movement) Light sensitive Vision problems

  4. Con’t 5 out of 100,000 people in U.S.A and Europe 20 out of 100,000 southern Nigeria More common in Black people Just as common in male and female

  5. Treatment The goal of treatment is to relieve symptoms. Treatment involves protecting the skin and eyes from the sun: Reduce sunburn risk by, using sunscreen, and covering up completely with clothing when exposed to the sun.

  6. Family • The parents have to watch there kids out side much more if they are albino due to their risk to sun damage and eye damage. • They must buy different things for them like special sunglasses and sunscreen.

  7. What we learned • We learned that albinism is a serious disease. • We also learned that people who live with albinism have to be careful and take precautions when they go out side.
